Audience Member Stumbled on this movie in Amazon Prime. Weird poster has nothing to do with the movie - which is a very "classic" film noir triangle: a gambler falls in love with a younger woman and together they make a dangerous bet that requires manipulating the gambler's estranged son. There are two levels to this movie. One is the complex world of professional gambling - its downs and ups - and the other is a tense drama of love and (possibly?) betrayal. Technically, "Player" uses an interesting color palette - including some "nostalgia" moments that let you know where its true heart lies. Great acting from the leads, working with crackling dialogue where people talk like we wish we talked (without sounding phony "hard-boiled" or "noir"). Starts off slow and evocative, then sets up its plot for a pretty fast-paced, tense closer. There is one intentional plot spoiler at the beginning that I caught but my viewing partner didn't, so I think it is an intentional wink to the audience. Didn't matter, we both enjoyed it. Really top acting rounds it out. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews
