New York sportswriter Mack (Gina Rodriguez) has spent years devising successful hook-up "plays" with best friend Adam (Damon Wayans Jr.) and their crew. While it has led to countless one-night stands over the years, following their playbook comes with a strict set of ground rules -- chief among them: you can't build a relationship from a play. When Mack unexpectedly falls for her latest target, charming war correspondent Nick (Tom Ellis), she begins to rethink the game entirely. As the lines between work, fun, friendship, and romance begin to blur, Mack must learn what it takes to go from simply scoring to playing for keeps.

Critics Consensus

Players proves Gina Rodriguez remains a thoroughly charming lead, even if those charms aren't quite enough to compensate for a frustratingly predictable plot.

Amy Nicholson FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) This is a rom-com where all the emphasis is on comedy and not so much on the romance, for sure. Mar 4, 2024 Full Review Brian Lowry CNN.com Nobody should expect too much of a movie in this genre released on Valentine’s Day, and grading on that curve, “Players” happily punches above its weight class and exceeds expectations. Feb 19, 2024 Full Review Nina Metz Chicago Tribune Players is a perfectly fine — occasionally better-than-fine — romantic comedy starring well-known TV actors who know their way around this kind of material. Rated: 2.5/4 Feb 15, 2024 Full Review Clotilde Chinnici Loud and Clear Reviews At its one hour and 45 minutes run time, it is a fine choice for a Netflix rom-com and the perfect entertainment if you are looking to laugh out loud, get a little emotional, and be put off eating whole branzino forever. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 14, 2024 Full Review Rachel Wagner Hallmarkies Podcast Entertaining little rom-com Jun 1, 2024 Full Review Nick Rogers Midwest Film Journal Unlike the interrogation-room scheme of most streaming romantic comedies, it's lit like a real movie. It’s the nicest thing to say, as the exertion Rodriguez and Wayans exhibit to even keep this watchable will just make you wish they had different agents. Birithivy Y Players - 6.5/10. This is a "shrug" film (a movie you won't remember or care for in the future). Though, its still a good enough watch and will pass the overall time you spend on it. Gina Rodriguez is charming and great here, and she lights up the screen every time she's in a scene. But Players reminds you so much of other better films, and that's its downfall of the film. Its funny enough and charming enough, with the vibe of the film and the camaraderie of the group is what makes the movie better than your run of the mill romcom. Its story is a bit cliched though, and you kinda know where it will end up going near the halfway point of the film. Players is another one of those Netflix romcoms that will be enjoyable enough and good enough to watch, though, you shouldn't expect anything genre changing here! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/14/24 Full Review Benjamin G Well done. Well done. Lots of great camaraderie and jokes to keep this movie fresh, gets a little too mushy and predictable towards the end but had to happen, don’t need a La La Land ending on this one. Now back to my falafel. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/24/24 Full Review Retro O This is one of the worst films I've ever had the misfortune to stumble across. Unlikable across the board and makes out deception is acceptable. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/12/24 Full Review John P This is the worst thing I’ve ever watched. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/16/24 Full Review Quora Q Started great but unfortunately ending boringly- it was obvious who would end up together. They used so many lines from ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ that it began to feel like a shabby remake. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/31/24 Full Review Audience Member Just a really bad movie with bad morals and nothing to it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/02/24 Full Review Read all reviews
