Critics Consensus

Playing It Cool pits Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan's easy chemistry against a screenplay that tries too hard to be quirky and clever, and the results are disappointingly lukewarm.

Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com Only the really strong cast, including great chemistry between the leads, keeps "Playing It Cool" from totally derailing. Rated: 1.5/4 May 8, 2015 Full Review Joe Neumaier New York Daily News Screenwriters Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair's script feels like a first draft that was written in one night as they got pumped up on Red Bull and speed-watched Netflix. Rated: 2/5 May 8, 2015 Full Review Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times You know you're in trouble when almost every character is given a name except the two leads. May 7, 2015 Full Review Sebastian Zavala Kahn Cinencuentro 'Playing it Cool' is disappointing not because it's unlike any other romantic comedy, but because it tries not to be one and fails spectacularly. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 2/4 Feb 1, 2018 Full Review Sarah Marrs Lainey Gossip I have uncontrollable hatred for this movie. I hate it with the fire of a thousand suns. It's the dumbest movie I've seen in recent memory. Oct 16, 2017 Full Review Norman Wilner NOW Toronto Worst of all, though, is its wholesale waste of an insanely talented cast - and not just Evans and Monaghan... I enjoy every last one of them, but not like this. Dear god, not like this. Rated: 1/5 Dec 18, 2015 Full Review Read all reviews

Sean S This movie has an interesting premise for a plot, and has a pretty well rounded cast but the movie just falls short from being a great Romcom. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/07/23 Full Review Zechariah C I REALLY enjoyed this movie! I loved it for several reasons: the story, the chemistry, the humor, and the ending. I even got a little teary-eyed. It was great! I don't understand why it got such bad reviews. It reminded me of romcoms I have seen so it is not like it was a snoozefest. I actually decided to restart it from the beginning, because I couldn't finish it on my first attempt and it was still a story I enjoyed. Well done to Chris, Michelle, and all involved! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/10/23 Full Review Robert C Cheesy and trite but with just enough truth in it to salvage the darn thing. I enjoyed it mildly. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/22 Full Review Audience Member Not as bad as reviews 2.4 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/10/22 Full Review Audience Member IOAN!
