Steve D Good idea bad execution. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/21/24 Full Review Leah S This film won't rank as one of my favorite. I probably enjoyed it more than I would have if Angela Lansbury hadn't been in it. I loved seeing her portray a young, coniving seductress. A superb performance, as usual. Such a far cry from JB Fletcher. I was caught off guard with the plot twist (didn't see that coming). The rest of the story became somewhat predictable, however. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/19/23 Full Review j F Enjoyable film, Burr was excellent but Lansbury was rather dry, not a passionate killer. Hard to believe. (1956) Rating: (3.5/5) Please Murder Me! is a forgotten noir thriller that deserves more than the 45% rating it currently carries. It is a hidden gem waiting to be rediscovered by anyone who loves classic films, psychological thrillers, or courtroom dramas with a moody edge. Raymond Burr, long before he became a household name as Perry Mason, delivers a gripping performance as Craig Carlson, a defense attorney drawn into a web of deceit, obsession, and guilt. His moral conflict plays out with slow-burning tension, and watching him unravel is a reminder of just how commanding he could be, even before his iconic courtroom days. Angela Lansbury, decades before charming us all as Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote, turns in a performance that’s far more dangerous. As Myra Leeds, she walks the line between vulnerability and manipulation with elegance. You can already see the depth and sharp intelligence that would define her long career. This isn’t a movie made like modern thrillers, and that’s part of its charm. The dialogue crackles with old-school sharpness, and the black-and-white cinematography casts every scene in beautiful shadow and doubt. The courtroom scenes are riveting, not because of explosive theatrics, but because of what’s left unsaid: guilt and love buried beneath every legal maneuver. The movie offers a compelling narrative and strong performances, particularly from Raymond Burr and Angela Lansbury. Burr’s portrayal of attorney Craig Carlson adds depth to the character, while Lansbury’s role as Myra Leeds showcases her versatility. The film’s noir elements and courtroom drama are engaging, providing a satisfying experience for fans of the genre. However, the film does have its shortcomings. Some plot developments may stretch plausibility, and the production values reflect the limitations of its time. Despite these issues, the film’s strengths outweigh its weaknesses, making it a worthwhile watch for those interested in classic noir thrillers. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/05/25 Full Review Audience Member Imagine a lawyer introducing evidence during his closing argument and the opposing attorney or judge saying nothing. That's one of a number of implausible plot points in this crime drama. The directing is listless, but the performances by Raymond Burr and Angela Lansbury make the film worthy of a look.
