Inspired by true stories and real-life characters, PLEASURE FACTORY tells an intimate and seductive tale involving pleasure seekers and pleasure providers in Geylang, Singapore's red light district. In the course of one night, an army boy loses his virginity with the help of his experienced buddy; a teenage girl gets initiated into the pleasure manufacturing process; and a jaded prostitute pays a young busker good money in exchange for a song he never gets to sing. The first feature film ever to be shot entirely on actual locations in Geylang, it stars Golden Horse Best Actress Yang Kuei-Mei (Ang Lee's EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN) and Ananda Everingham (Thai Horror Hit SHUTTER) alongside a cast of fresh talents found through street casting in the red light district and around Singapore.

Russell Edwards Variety Making Herman Yau's recent dreadful Hong Kong film on a similar subject, Whispers and Moans look like a narrative masterpiece by comparison, this pic borders on the inept. May 24, 2007 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Directionless, & amateurish. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member It has a slightly (and inconsistently) documentary look and feel (though it isn't), and sometimes seems less like a movie than a series of educational segments, which could be called: "How to Use a Vibrating Condom." "How Much Should I Expect to Pay For a Whore in Singapore?" "The Perils of Whoring Your Own Daughter." Strand has released several Asian titles I've loved like "The Wayward Cloud" and "Help Me Eros" which all advertised this one. I was hoping it would be their equal; it was not. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member ARGH! I wanted to like this film but the absence of even basic technical capability, in addition to the strenuous relationships that the director tries to build between a disparate cast really diminished the chances of this film being a success for me. There were only whiffs of a story at best and the intimate scenes are mostly self-conscious. Though due credit must be given to Yang kuei-mei for most believable character with least spoken words. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member the concept of this film must have looked appealing on paper but the editing and presentation was lacking in many aspects. Too little dialogue for me, very unrealistic. I don't believe anyone can go through so much without speaking. the characters are not mute. artistic? hardly. alot of bumpy shots. even if the idea was shooting it raw, the film didn't unveil the emotions of the character. film is no way to get to know geylang and it's character. head down yourself, stay a few hours and make your own conclusion. the time spent in geylang itself, soaking in the place is better worth than catching this film. 2 stars are for the cast who dared to bare and the two guys who were "making out" bare body with each other. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member i dont get the mostly negative reviews for this film from critic's. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The problem i had with Ekachai's Beautiful Boxer was that he cut every scene short. Here he leaves the camera running for minutes and minutes and its great. Yes the characters' or even the directors' thoughts aren't established, i mean what the fuck is the motivation for Ananda in this?, i have no idea, but i didn't care. I didn't want to be told. I didn't want to find out if the documentary segments were real or fake. I didn't want to know whether the prostitute was lying to him or not. I didn't want Ananda explained. I wanted to draw my own conclusions and thats exactly what i did. Its certainly no masterpiece. But i was very impressed by Ekachai's work here. Pitty he went on to make the Coffin. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Very well thought of. . Surprise Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
