David Lewis San Francisco Chronicle Operating in a country not known for its tolerance, or its output of LGBT films, director Tomasz Wasilewski goes against the grain... Jun 30, 2020 Full Review Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard I found it hard to care. Still, the bit where the title gets explained is sweet. Rated: 2/5 Dec 6, 2013 Full Review Peter Beech Guardian Builds a compelling narrative on the back of its understated performances, sexual realism and austerely beautiful cinematography. Rated: 3/5 Dec 5, 2013 Full Review Giuseppe Sedia Kino Mania Not yet,” a [sentence] that suggests Poles are aware of, but not yet ready to accept the existence of LGBT relationships. The hard-hitting epilogue also suggests that the road to that acceptance remains a long one. Rated: 3/5 Mar 25, 2024 Full Review Patrick Gamble CineVue Wasilewski's masterfully orchestrated, elegantly framed and intensely provocative film is one of the year's best LGBT efforts. Rated: 4/5 Mar 6, 2019 Full Review Alistair Harkness Scotsman Tomasz Wasilewski uses the bleak, rigid industrial spaces against which the film is set to neatly parallel how the lack of fluidity in modern Polish society makes it increasingly difficult for his protagonist to negotiate such choppy waters. yke v Why do we always have to die and/or live in misery Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Intensely engaging. Shows cultural limitations of Poland regarding coming-out and LGBT issues. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Well that was boring. Took me about five hours to get through because I kept pausing it to do more enjoyable things, like load the dishwasher. Nicely shot but that's absolutely all Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Quality, but infuriating. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Floating Skyscrapers – another film school quality product. A film about an incestuous mother, and a pathetic girlfriend who settles for life with a gay man. A cookie cutter film in which one of the gay characters has to die from gay bashing, and the other has to live an unbearable existence because he’s too weak to grow a pair of balls, and get on with life as a gay man. A film in which the only character that has any self-respect is the one they kill off. We can’t have a well-adjusted character upsetting all the artsy, doom and gloom. Maybe one day the writer, and so many other writers, will develop enough talent to write a movie with an original story line. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Kuba is an aspiring champion swimmer with an uninspiring life. He lives with his girlfriend Sylwia and his overbearing mother. One night at a gallery opening, he meets Michal who not only saves him from his boredom at the party, but also in life in general as they strike up a close friendship, which turns into an affair. This is a beautifully shot Polish drama which seemed awash with misery. It's supposed to be a heatwave, but I found it all rather cold. It even has a blue filter over everything. The chemistry is electric between the two male leads, but the passionate scenes seemed a little sharp edged. A well-acted and punchy coming out drama, but quite a devastating bummer of a film. No pun intended. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
