Beggar Apple Annie (Bette Davis) learns that her daughter, escorted by an aristocratic suitor, plans to visit. It's great news -- except that she has tricked her daughter into believing she is a wealthy socialite. Fearing her true identity will disappoint, Annie petitions a superstitious mobster (Glenn Ford), who thinks the apples she sells are lucky, for help. Hesitant at first, the mafioso is persuaded by his girlfriend (Hope Lange) to disguise Annie, if only long enough to fool her daughter.

Some fine performances can be found within this screwball, but it is largely dictated by an awkward tone and a testing languorous pace. For Capra completists only. Go to Full Review

I'm probably in a minority about this one but I found it forced and corny, and far too long for its slender story. Go to Full Review

john r Aug 25 Late era Frank Capra benefits greatly from a spirit of good will, even if sharp dressing hood Dave The Dude has to be dragged into the do gooding. Glenn Ford is in his element and the farce gets going in the second half. See more Feb 8 This is an uplifting movie to watch in 2025. See more Judy D Dec 27 This movie is a fond memory from my youth.
