Audience Member I'll attempt not to regret too fervently the 45 minutes or so I lost watching the first part of this film, and rather focus on the positive fact that I didn't waste another 45 minutes finishing it. An indie film by a director/photographer about a photographer/director. It centers around the director/photographer's first date and subsequent relationship with a model in New York City. There is copious drug use, plenty of alcohol, free-flowing language, and pretty mindless sexuality - and all the vapid despair that these sorts of things attempt to mute for a time. There were two halfway real and touching moments in the first 45 minutes. The first is on Shawn's first date with Athena. He's filming her in a playground, and she's talking about how she left Oregon to end up in the Big Apple, but that she doubts any of the people she grew up with in Oregon will ever leave there, and she feels bad for them. Shawn asks her why she feels bad for them, and she answers "I don't really feel bad for them. I just feel bad, you know?" It's a moment of frank and naked honesty in a film that documents to some extent a world where nakedness of the body is taken for granted, but nakedness of the soul is to be avoided at all costs. The other touching moment occurs as Shawn attempts to record a message to Athena during a 3-week modeling job she has in Paris. Feelings are awkward and hard to express and capture, even if you're a hip photographer/director. But these moments of touching reality were lost in a sea of despair. People put on airs as easily as models put on clothing. There's such an overwhelming sense of sadness to everyone in the film. No joy, no love, no hope. Nothing but the desire to numb the mind and body to a point where the aching emptiness is less perceived. At one point Athena says that the only thing she's afraid of is not living life to it's fullest. And yet in the stupor of non-stop alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, and other drugs - it's hard to believe that she actually believes at some place inside her that she's embracing the best life has to offer her. I have no idea how this film ends, nor do I care. This film is unrated and totally unacceptable for children. Frankly, it's not acceptable for adults, either.
