Audience Member W.C. Fields' first film contains some very funny moments and immediately begins to shape the character he would quickly become, but its clunky structure feels like it's missing several sequences. The story jumps back and forth between some kind of bourgeoisie party and a pool hall, and Fields frequents both; the result is a chaotic string of gleefully violent gags and fun little billiard trick shots that make this short film worth checking out but certainly not essential. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member This is the first film from W.C. Fields and it is essentially a silent slapstick comedy. It was extremely dull. Let's set aside the comedy aspect of the film. The slapstick/trick shots were, to me, awful. The "stunts" were cartoonish and rather bland. It certainly wasn't funny. But I'm willing to set those aside for a moment and look at the film generally. What is left is absolutely nothing. The film is completely lacking in plot and character. I couldn't find any reason to actually be watching "Pool Sharks" other than seeing W.C. Fields in his first role, and he certainly wasn't funny enough to make this entertaining in the least. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member wc fields first movie. its not that it isnt funny, but this just doesnt have the laughs or charm of the later talking fields and certainly not chaplin.
