Audience Member Shindo's bucolic war melodrama paints a picture of suffering faced by the community, and women, in particular, as lives (and families) are sacrificed to the war effort. The dialogue between the widow and the serviceman was dramatic yet poignant, and probably reflects a lot of what was "politely" unsaid in japanese society. The triumph of hope and renewal amid utter devastation seemed almost a trite ending, but there are enough issues raised throughout the film to make it memorable. The local official brought in much needed hilarity to counter the sad tale. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member i felt really sorry for every national serviceman, their families and all civilians who had to endure a war... especially in societies where the "weaker" sex had to obey the whims and fancies of everyone else. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member life is a lottery... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Not exceptional compared to many other Japanese war movies. You know the ending at the beginning, just keep waiting for it to happen. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Seems like it would be a rather routine tale of a soldier's wife but, even though the plot unfolds without any great surprises and doesn't spend a lot of obvious time on character development, I found it all rather involving. The film takes place almost entirely in and around one house and the cast is pretty small but the film very effectively conveys the impact of the war on those left behind. The movie began to lose it's hold on me with a lapse into hysterics toward the end but mostly recovered from that. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
