Critics Consensus

Practical Magic's jarring tonal shifts sink what little potential its offbeat story may have -- though Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock's chemistry makes a strong argument for future collaborations.

Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) Filming in a golden-syrupy light, Dunne seems to have little ambition beyond making his stars look adorable (not tricky) and hoping we'll have forgotten most of The Witches of Eastwick. Mar 30, 2019 Full Review Jami Bernard New York Daily News It doesn't seem as if there was much communication between the three screenwriters who are credited with adapting Alice Hoffman's novel. Perhaps they should have tried ESP. Rated: 1/4 Mar 30, 2019 Full Review Jay Boyar Orlando Sentinel Practical Magic, in other words, is anything but magical. The only spell it casts will put you right to sleep. Mar 30, 2019 Full Review Chance Solem-Pfeifer Willamette Week There’s a particular exhilaration to movies that veer off-road without announcement or apology—the “midnight margaritas” interlude in Practical Magic being one of the all-time joyful examples. Jan 22, 2025 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins The majority of it is mischievousness, meddling in love lives, and wee-hour revelry; the bulk of the preternatural shenanigans are entirely frivolous – lending to something of a tonal mishmash. Benedicte M Like a warm, sweet embrace, yet playful, and with a tiny dash of horror. The attention to detail is absolutely stellar. And what a delight it is to watch multidimensional women on-screen. You don't like strong and/or complicated women? Steer clear. You need to regain a sense of self and/or faith in humanity? This is the vibe. You wish to see beautiful properties you can never have? You've come to the right place. I've had to limit myself to only watch it every October to make sure I won't watch it to pieces, but gave myself unlimited watchtime during that month (recommended). Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/31/25 Full Review Hope D This is one of my all time favorite Halloween movies. Its a sweet and playful take on the world of magic. I have watched his movie more times than any other. Its up there with hocus pocus. Now...off for midnight margaritas 🍹 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/31/25 Full Review Emmaleigh R. Such a cute movie about sisterly love Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/30/25 Full Review Matthew D A magical witch centric fantasy comedy-drama! Griffin Dunne’s romantic comedy-drama Practical Magic (1998) is a fun fantasy based on Alice Huffman’s novel Practical Magic. Dunne’s direction is steadfast and delightful as he chooses authentic 1990’s era costumes and soundtrack for a wonderful realistic tone. Dunne directs Practical Magic as a serious romance coming-of-age drama with an unholy humor and dark magic themes. Dunne directs numerous genres from scene to scene with a fun loving attitude all the while. Andrew Dunn’s cinematography is beautiful and gripping far beyond what you would expect for such a fun movie! He uses dark imagery, serious close-up shots of faces, and long tracking shots to entrancing effect for Practical Magic! Alan Silvestri’s score is his peak as a composer as he brings a magical and mysterious vibe to Practical Magic. His melodies soar over fantastic sequences of witch conjuring and family drama alike! The soundtrack is a darling mix of musical styles. Stevie Nicks’ “If You Ever Did Believe” and Faith Hill’s “This Kiss” get poignant moments in the film, while Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You” is another highlight. Elvis Presley’s classic “Always on My Mind” is twisted into a haunting melody sung by the villain. Practical Magic even has a funny drunk sequence set to Harry Nilsson’s “Coconut” drinking theme. Robin Swicord’s script is a flux of coming-of-age drama and family drama as she writes about growing up, finding love, staying true to yourself, defending your sister, coping with loss, and surviving abuse. Practical Magic may appear playful and seductive in its witch aesthetics, but it dives deeper into dramatic representations of sisterhood, witchcraft, abuse, motherhood, grief, and romantic expectations that keeps Practical Magic strangely and refreshingly mature! Sandra Bullock is adorable and likable as the sweet witch sister Sally Owens. Her depiction of a widow who must still be a mother for her daughters and protective of her sister is wonderful. Bullock honestly gives her best dramatic performance begging for the return of her dead husband and the safety for her sister. I love her natural beauty and genuine charm in Practical Magic. Similarly, Nicole Kidman is alluring and tragic as the willful witch Gillian Owens. Much like in Big Little Lies, Kidman portrays a woman surviving abuse from a brutal boyfriend. Kidman is transcendent when she bravely depicts a woman cowering in fear or standing up for herself. Nicole Kidman is an all time great dramatic actress and proves she has always been magnificent way back in Practical Magic. I should mention how heavenly Kidman looks throughout Practical Magic. Kidman is ethereal in her dark eye liner and vibrant natural red hair. She looks like an archetypal Goth girl in her black dress and pale skin. Nicole Kidman is playful and seductive so that you’ll never forget her in Practical Magic. Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing are fantastic as the witch aunts to the leading ladies. Goran Visnjic channels both Dracula and Elvis for his dark antagonist. He eats up the scenery with his vampiric cowboy style. Aidan Quinn is handsome and charming as Bullock’s love interest and an intriguing police investigator. Lastly, a young Evan Rachel Woods is excellent as Bullock’s excitable daughter alongside Alexandra Artrip. In short, Practical Magic is a splendid haze of genres delving into romance, fantasy, comedy, and drama all to cool 1990’s music. Practical Magic fits nicely with The Craft, The Crow, and Hocus Pocus. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are dreamy and charismatic, elevating an already great movie into an unforgettable Halloween classic.
