Critics Consensus

Overdosing on flashbacks, and more portentous than profound, the overly obtuse Premonition weakly echoes such twisty classics as Memento, The Sixth Sense, and Groundhog Day.

Nov 14, 2019 Full Review Joshua Starnes ComingSoon.net Like a lot of mediocre movies it's not about much more than the immediate emotional response it's trying to generate. The filmmakers realize this and make an effort to shoe horn some themes in ... it just makes an already muddled movie even more muddled. TheMovieSearch R Premonition has received its fair share of criticism over the years, but in truth, it’s not nearly as bad as many make it out to be. It’s an imperfect yet engaging psychological thriller that uses a clever narrative hook — a woman experiencing her husband’s death out of chronological order — to explore grief, fate, and the desperation to change what feels inevitable. Sandra Bullock anchors the entire film with a deeply emotional and nuanced performance that elevates the material far beyond what’s written on the page. The direction works effectively to capture the confusion and dread of Bullock’s character as she bounces between days, unsure of what’s real, what’s past, and what’s still to come. The tone feels consistent with the film’s emotional intent — melancholic, haunting, and tense — and while it doesn’t always stick the landing, it succeeds in keeping you invested in her mental unraveling. Where Premonition falters most is in the screenplay. It’s easy to see why some viewers found it disjointed or confusing. The time-jumping narrative is ambitious but occasionally feels loose and uneven, creating moments where the logic of the story doesn’t quite hold up. With tighter writing and stronger connective tissue between scenes, the film could have been far more powerful and cohesive. Still, despite these flaws, Sandra Bullock carries the film effortlessly. She portrays fear, heartbreak, and confusion with such authenticity that you can’t help but empathize with her. Every emotional beat lands because of her performance, and that alone makes Premonition worth watching. Ultimately, this is a film that deserves a bit more grace than it’s been given. It’s not a flawless thriller, but it’s one that takes creative risks and explores emotional depth often missing from similar genre films. If you go in with an open mind and focus on the human story at its core, you might find Premonition to be a surprisingly moving and worthwhile watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/24/25 Full Review Julianne C. Interesting story. Going back and watching movies from early 2000s that I didn’t see. I miss movies that aren’t explicit and crude. Just a good story. Recommend. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/21/25 Full Review Raymond E I loved it. Sandra Bullock adds a lot to the scene with her superb acting. She really can emote. The movie is a pleasant surprise from the CGI non-sense that is rolling these days. The plot was not easy to follow since it moved to and fro in a sort of time warp. Yes it borrowed a little from Ground Hog Day, Memento & Don't Let Go. Btw it was better than Memento and I am a fan of Guy Pearce. I had just one issue: I wanted Linda to save her husband at marker 220. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/13/25 Full Review Renee B I’m just here to find out who I need to contact to get my 2 hours of my life back or where to get compensation for having to watch such a horrible movie. I watched the whole thing, just for NOTHING to be explained. That was horrible and expected more from a Sandra bullock movie. I’ll read reviews first next time, regardless of who’s in it’s Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/25 Full Review JoAnne S Terrible movie! I am surprised at Sandra Bullock. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/25 Full Review Michael J So unless I’m missing something, she is actually responsible for his death… If she hadn’t called, he wouldn’t have pulled over at mile marker 220 and died terrible movie Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/04/25 Full Review Read all reviews
