Critics Consensus

As ambitious as it is daringly transgressive, Prevenge should thrill fans of pitch-black horror-comedy -- and open untold opportunities for writer/director/star Alice Lowe.

Amy Nicholson FilmWeek (LAist) It's rare to see a horror film with such a feminine point of view. Aug 18, 2020 Full Review Adam Nayman Cinema Scope If the script's conflation of delicate conditions is never quite as outrageous or unsettling as its creator intends, Prevenge is still filled with moments that show Lowe's skill as a director and as an actress. Sep 28, 2017 Full Review Adam Nayman The Ringer Lowe is a more striking and resourceful actor than director, and that's fine. She's clearly a huge talent, and it's encouraging to see her finding her voice so soon, even if it's creepy baby-doll drone. Apr 7, 2017 Full Review Kat Halstead Common Sense Media Alice Lowe writes, directs, and stars in this bold comedy-horror that mixes bloody gore with a very British form of pitch-black humor and a powerful female viewpoint. Dec 4, 2024 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh As sick and twisted as it is funny, while also being full of heart, showing the lengths a parent will go to to make their child happy. Rated: 4/5 May 12, 2023 Full Review Emma Wolfe SpookyAstronauts A comedy horror that actually has... a soul to it and layers with strong female lead. Claudio C Prevenge (2016) The Psychopath Fetus (11,748 – 05 Jun 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) The pregnant widow Ruth (Alice Lowe) is grieving the loss of her husband, who died in a climbing when there was the need to cut the cord to save the rest of the group. Out of the blue, Ruth is convinced that her fetus is controlling her and is seeking out revenge for the death of her father. She begins a crime spree killing the people saved during the climbing after the death of her husband. “Prevenge” (2016) is a combination of slasher and dark comedy by Shudder with the story of an insane pregnant woman that believes she has a psychopath fetus and embarks in a crime spree to revenge the death of her husband. The film is directed and written by Alice Lowe, who is also the protagonist, and is not bad, keeping the attention of the viewer until the last scene. My vote is six. Title (Brazil): Not Available My Blog: https://maniacosporfilme.wordpress.com/ Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/06/25 Full Review Johnny D I thought this movie would be goofy and fun, but instead it was pessimistic and awkward. The movie has such a great premise, but unfortunately it just drags on and doesn't capitalize. It does have a few funny moments, but for the most part the pregnant mom-to-be character's cynicism rubs off on the viewer. She makes it abundantly clear that she's very unhappy, and in doing so manages to make me just as unhappy watching her. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/23 Full Review andrei d Not quite Sightseers Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review tom m I'm not quite sure what prompted me to watch this. Oh well, live and learn. Quite peculiar story. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Everything about this movie was great. Will definitely view again! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review mark b I really struggled with Prevenge. I read a review somewhere that called it "pitch black," and I think that nails it. There are comedic elements in a few places which feel really odd given the tone of most of the rest of the movie. It's essentially a much more vicious Promising Young Woman with our anti-heroine being seven months pregnant. That being said, huge kudos to Alice Lowe who played the very pregnant lead/writer/director. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
