What to Know

Critics Consensus

It doesn't offer much in the way of substance, but Prince of Persia is a suitably entertaining swashbuckler -- and a substantial improvement over most video game adaptations.

Keith Uhlich Time Out A Jerry Bruckheimer-produced video game adaptation-it has to be good, doesn't it? (Ya, sarcasm.) Rated: 2/5 Nov 18, 2011 Full Review Nick Schager L.A. Weekly [A] cacophonous, frivolous adaptation of Ubisoft's Arabian Nights-themed video-game series. Jun 7, 2010 Full Review Peter Rainer Christian Science Monitor The sheer whoosh of the story line keeps you watching anyway, and, as the prince, Jake Gyllenhaal has a hearty good-naturedness that comes as a relief amid all the turbocharged antics. He wears his heroism lightly. Rated: B- Jun 4, 2010 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review When so many summer blockbusters try desperately to achieve a balance between escapism and quality filmmaking, this movie’s lack of effort to be anything but standardized is insulting. Rated: 1/4 Aug 18, 2023 Full Review Stuart McGurk NME (New Musical Express) While it doesn't really work as a whole, the set-pieces are diverting enough along the way. Rated: 2/5 May 19, 2021 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins The only redeeming factor is Ben Kingsley, who seems to genuinely enjoy his terrible role. Audience Member 15 years old and this is a very good video game adaptation It’s a standard but fun swashbuckler thanks to producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Walt Disney Pictures starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley, and Alfred Molina Based on the popular title of the same name from Ubisoft it takes place in the Arabian setting of Persia in the kingdom of Nasaf Prince Dastan, his brothers, his father, and uncle are launching an attack on Alamut During the siege Dastan finds a mysterious dagger guarded by Princess Tamina He soon discovers it can take the weilder back through time using up the sands inside the jewel But after his father is mysteriously killed Dastan and Tamina are on the run being labeled as fugitives, all the while Dastan uncovers a more sinister plot involving the dagger being misused to meddle with time Dastan and Tamina must save the empire but also the world from the dagger’s misbegotten powers while learning to work together eventually falling for one another Again this is a fun swashbuckler and they incorporate a lot of the acrobatics from the game It also has the romantic pairing from the PS3 version as well with Dastan and Tamina’s bickering but lovable chemistry Gyllenhaal carries the role enough as a roguish orphan raised by royalty saving lives rather than taking them sparing his enemies although the movie is very light on characterization Arterton makes for a fierce capable, plucky princess giving all the exposition the necessary weight to keep the stakes high Molina makes for silly comic relief too as a gold loving scoundrel Kingsley although perhaps too obvious makes for a rather fine villain Nizam The film looks gorgeous, the costumes are beautiful, the sets are finely detailed, and there’s fun action scenes The one thing that’s a new addition is the Hassansins who do come off as quite gothic and fierce lurking in the shadows falling into legend True it’s one of those summer blockbusters that relies heavily on the special effects and the romance is very typical but it keeps the propulsion of the film going despite its messiness and wooden dialogue Mainly nobody is Persian which is easy to spot Everything changes with time, some lives are linked to each other across decades connected by an ancient calling, time shouldn’t be meddled with, the power of the gods are not meant for mortal men as all that can be seen is greed and treachery, man still has potential for good, destiny is always certain whether going forward or backward, trusting your heart makes all the difference The movie still is entertaining sticking pretty close to the source material And it stinks it never birthed a franchise since the reviews were very mixed and peoples interest in the games began to dissipate as well as the 2007 writers strike pushing it back Flaws aside the movie is surprisingly solid when it stands on its own and one of the better video game adaptations being summer popcorn fare Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/29/25 Full Review Aaron U The movie is bad. People with British accents playing Persians, campy dialog, and a plot that makes ZERO sense. The action scenes were poorly done, as was the CGI. This makes the Brendan Fraser movie The Mummy, which I love, look like Shakespeare. The best part of the movie was Alfred Molina. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/17/25 Full Review Amir S As a film in itself - a good film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/24/25 Full Review Carlos N What a fun, goofy film! Sometimes you just have to let go, sit back and look at films for what they are. From the get go, it was well filmed, with beautiful cinematography, and a cast that seemed easy to follow. The wayward brother, the evil uncle, the loving brothers, the father who had sons he evaluated, and a damsel who wasn’t a damsel in distress. Consider it a guilty pleasure. No Oscars here but a fun popcorn eating time to be had for sure. Sit down with some you love and show them that with love, all is possible! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/25 Full Review Tekendra S I don't know why critic hate it. Give it a chance . Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/26/24 Full Review Jack L "Prince of Persia" delivers enjoyable action setpieces and a sweet central romance that makes it easy to see why it appealed to younger audiences. Unfortunately, the thin plot and outdated CGI show its age, with some strange cinematography choices adding to its flaws. Though entertaining, it ultimately lands in guilty pleasure territory, more for nostalgia than quality. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/20/24 Full Review Read all reviews
