What to Know

Critics Consensus

What Princesas lacks in unique insight into its subject matter, it more than makes up in its sensitive, empathetic portrayal of women engaged in the world's oldest profession.

Cath Clarke Guardian With not a pimp in sight, no mention of people-trafficking, and a single token drug-addict, this Spanish prostitution drama is serenely old-fashioned. Rated: 2/5 Dec 28, 2007 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) The film has inspirational messages about the rewards of multicultural integration, but its tacit approval of prostitution as a rewarding career choice seems a bit peculiar. Rated: 3/5 Dec 28, 2007 Full Review Nick Funnell Time Out Compelling, frequently funny and, commendably, resists wrapping things up sentimentally. Nice Manu Chao soundtrack, too. Dec 28, 2007 Full Review Holly Grigg-Spall Film4 Princesas is heartwarming and sporadically surprising, bolstered by beautifully measured performances. Rated: 3/5 Dec 28, 2007 Full Review Matthew Turner ViewLondon Impressively directed, emotionally engaging drama with terrific performances from Candela Pena and newcomer Micaela Nevrez. Audience Member A very good and realistic drama that shows the insides of prostitution in a very simple and realistic way. Candela Peña won a best actress Goya award and in my opinion well deserved. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Buen drama/comedia de España con subtítulos en inglés, 109 minutos Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Great performances. Engaging and not sugar coated. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Rather dull considering the content. At no point does this film push the boundaries or expose a gritty side. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member In this film Caye embodies the perfect combination of independence and insecurity. This was a tasteful and elegant depiction of the dangers, struggles and shame-ridden moments which face ladies of the night. The inner conflicts were genuine and were only further illuminated by graceful, and sometimes philosophic dialogue. I wish there were more films of this quality. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member There is a hint of Almodovar in this defiantly optimistic tale of prostitution and chauvinism and more than a hint of Ken Loach in the brutal realism of the camera work and the complete authenticity of the performances. Their are some terribly harrowing scenes and a sense of approval regarding prostitution which seem ill-advised, but all-in-all, this is a memorable, hilarious, disturbing indictment of anti-multiculturalism in the squalid, inevitable lives of middle-class prostitutes in Spain.
