Audience Member She hides away from the world's impurities. Princess Arete is held hostage in a castle by a wicked sorcerer. The sorcerer builds stooges by transforming various things into people who follow him. He does other magic as well, but he feels the princess can one day give him eternal life; meanwhile, the princess gets in touch with a villager who spreads the word on her existence. The villagers will band together to try and breakout the princess. "If I marry the princess, I will return to my natural, handsome form." Sunoa Katabuchi, director of The Blinkins and episodes from the television series Black Lagoon and Wonder Beat S, delivers Princess Arete. The storyline for this picture had a Black Cauldron feel to it. The animation wasn't elite but fit the story well and the film is fairly well paced with interesting settings and characters. "Our master has changed something into a person again?" I came across this on Netflix and decided to add it to my queue. I am generally a fan of anime animated pictures and found this very entertaining and fairly unique. I enjoyed the settings and magic and felt the conclusion was solid. I strongly recommend seeing this once if you're a fan of the genre. Grade: B Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member How did I miss something this wonderful. This film belongs somewhere between Kiki's Deliver Service and Howl's Moving Castle as a wonderful magical film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Not a lot of tension or conflict as well as slow at times - however it is enjoyable. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Like a made-for-TV version of Studio Ghibli, “Arete” is a unique enough story about an aging wizard holding a power-wielding princess hostage. Unfortunately, being really slow and somewhat convoluted, there’s just not enough here to make it really worth watching. It ultimately amounts to not much more than a marginally passable morality fairy tale. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Arite Hime (Princess Arete) is a rather unknown jewel of animation. This movie is celebrated because of its sober exposition of feminism, but I think it also succeeds greatly in the way it creates a wondrous longing for the long-lost knowledge of ancient "sorcerers" in the middle of a retrograde medieval world. It then offers a solution to the problem through the fruit of hard work and the creative power of the human mind while never resorting to pamphlet education or moralist accusations. Knowing Satoshi Kon, Mamoru Hosoda, Makoto Shinkai and Hayao Miyazaki, I can say this is one of my favorite animated movies of all time. Simply put, Princess Arete is godly storytelling and animation. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member a nice movie, not your usual anime drawing but the story is not what you would expect of an anime with that look.
