Stylistic children's movie is mostly song and dance numbers performed on sparsely decorated sets. See more 01/16/2010 Movies that are heavily packed with symbolism can be fascinating. But problems occur when a viewer isn't very well versed in the culture that produced the symbols. That's what happened with me and this movie. It's beautifully produced, and interesting in its surreal combination of theater and movie styles. But other than recognizing that lots of symbolic things were going on, I had almost no idea what the film was about beyond the most basic elements of the plot (which are fairly simple, typical fairytale concepts). If you're more up on your Japanese mythology and cultural symbolism (especially traditional theater), you'll probably get a lot more out of this movie than I did. Otherwise, you'll probably be left scratching your head, as I was. See more 09/24/2009 This is completely crazy, but fun if that's what you're in the mood for.
