Michael Atkinson Village Voice The breathtakingly lurid finale, set in a screening room, has an almost necrophilic obsessiveness. Oct 31, 2007 Full Review Time Out Although beset by a possessive lover, by showbiz exploiters and, in a remarkable funfair scene, by humanity generally, Brooks is so sheerly, dominatingly vivacious that oppression hardly seems an issue. Sep 30, 2006 Full Review Vincent Canby New York Times Miss Brooks is a lovely, unusually idiosyncratic screen presence but the film is something of an effort to sit through. Audience Member One third of Louise Brooks' European tragedy trilogy - a must see film with a must see ending. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member I was lucky enough to be able to see the original silent version in Brisbane recently & is cited by many as the much superior version. A simple film that's full of charm & despite its linear story is well written & shot. The story of young French entering a beauty contest for fun & ends up winning. The tension of the film lies in her jealous boyfriend...filled to the brim with creativity & style this is a must see film...Louise Brooks is extraordinary in her last role. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member You've seen the themes before in different movies, the story of a girl who wins a beauty contest but her boyfriend doesn't like her being stared at by all those men. She marries him, but misses being a star. The actors are okay, and the story is interesting, but towards the end it feels long. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member It's like a silent film, only with sound. In other words, it's a regular ol' movie! But a great one, in fact the best French talkie about beauty contests made before World War II. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member This is probably the only time in her career Louise Brooks looked wholesome. Worth seeing for her, but there's really nothing to the film. The version I saw had the French dubbed in, but it was still shot like a silent film - interesting to see the way that transition happened. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Less interesting than the two great Brooks-Pabst collaborations, Pandora's Box and Diary of a Lost Girl, but worth seeing just because Brooks' career ended far too soon. The closing, with the image of the dead Brooks lying beneath a film projection of her singing and performing, is brilliant. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Read all reviews
