Matthew D Endlessly charming characters, clever mysteries, gorgeous score, and resplendent animation! Japanese director Masakazu Hashimoto’s animated family mystery film Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva (2009) is simply wonderful. I loved Eternal Diva when it came out and now everyone gets to see it, now that it is widely available on a remastered blu-ray. I’ve long adored the Professor Layton video games. Curious Village, Diabolical Box, and Unwound Future are incredible experiences. Eternal Diva is a fabulous film for families to get to enjoy Professor Layton’s puzzles together. It’s very cool how the movie incorporates a chance for the audience to solve the mystery live as you watch. Masakazu Hashimoto’s direction is stylish and sweet, bringing both a sense of English charm to his characters and setting along with witty Japanese puzzles and humor. The pretty animation features cute characters, swift movements, moody lighting, vivid colors, and a posh aesthetic. I like the sea faring voyage with plenty of puzzles, clues, and reveals. Writer Aya Matsui came up with a fascinating mystery involving opera music, a musical instrument, an opera theater, a missing girl, a dead girl, a mystery host, and eternal life. I found the puzzles stimulating and very fun to solve. I especially love the final reveal with the sheet music. Christopher Robin Miller’s steadfast deep voice as the smart gentleman hero Professor Hershel Layton is fantastic. He’s very likable and sounds intelligent and calm. Maria Darling is funny as the hyper apprentice Luke Triton. Nana Mizuki’s powerful singing voice for Janice Quatlane is impressive. I loved hearing her serene tone and angelic vocals. Emma Tate is great as Janice’s kind speaking voice and Melina Whistler’s melancholic voice. Jonathan Keeble is excellent as the raving mad scientist villain Jean Descole. Stuart Organ’s boisterous voice as the foolish Inspector Clamp Grosky is hilarious. Robbie Stevens is quite sorrowful as the grieving father and organist composer Oswald Whistler. Sarah Hadland’s sultry voice for the smug socialite Celia Raidley is fabulous. Claire Morgan does a good job as the little girl Nina and chess prodigy Amelia Ruth. Editor Toshio Henmi’s swift cutting keeps Eternal Diva moving along briskly for a quick adventure that never overstays its 99 minute length. Composers Tomohito Nishiura and Tsuneyoshi Saito craft dazzling music. From gentle piano, soaring opera vocals, driving drums, lively violin playing, hazy accordion melodies, to groovy bass. Eternal Diva’s score is simply divine and astounding to revisit. Sound designer Masafumi Mima captures crisp voices and clear singing. In short, Eternal Diva is an intriguing mystery and enjoyable adventure for all families. Fans of Professor Layton will be delighted in the film’s faithfulness to the video game series and newcomers will find Eternal Diva very inviting to new viewers.
