Courtney Howard Variety Its main friendship dynamic and ensuing shenanigans fail to resonate due to sloppy character construction and a cadre of cringe-worthy circumstances. May 8, 2024 Full Review Matt Zoller Seitz RogerEbert.com It feels like a very long pilot for a Netflix show that would go to series, build a modest but loyal following, then get canceled after two seasons so the streamer doesn’t have to give everyone a raise for going to three. But there's loads of talent. Rated: 2.5/4 May 5, 2024 Full Review Aurora Amidon AV Club Prom Dates’ high-concept plot is simply a vehicle for two things: a succession of funny sequences and a handful of touchy-feely self-discoveries. Rated: B- May 3, 2024 Full Review Clotilde Chinnici Loud and Clear Reviews While many rom-coms tend to glorify the high school years and portray them as a lot more glamorous than what they actually are, this movie does not shy away from showing us the most awkward and complicated sides of being a teenager. Rated: 3/5 Sep 14, 2024 Full Review Jennifer Green Common Sense Media At least a few laughs will be had with this film, but its entertaining lead actors deserved better than this superficially edgy teen escapade. May 19, 2024 Full Review Louisa Moore Screen Zealots Doesn’t cement itself as a teen movie classic, but it accurately captures the essence of senior year shenanigans with humor and heart. Laura G Maybe I'd have liked this better if I hadn't recently watched "Book Smart." I don't know. I loved Julia Lester in "High School Musical: The Musical, The Series" and the rest of the cast here is fine. But the script is predictable and cringy (not in the "this is a teen thing and teen stuff can be cringy" way, but in a "we're moving from plot point A to plot point B and we needed to throw in some stuff that doesn't feel genuine" way), and characters aren't given much to work with. For instance, Greg is definitely written as a caricature the whole film until we need to feel badly for him, when he has a moment of feeling like a real person, only to go back to being a cartoon again at the end. I feel like this was trying to walk a line between Disney YA content and an actual adult movie, to appeal to maybe "edgy" or just modern teens. I don't know how it hit that demographic, but I'm someone who loves YA content and this was just... meh. Wanted to love it, but instead it just killed time while I worked out.
