Critics Consensus

Its gruesome scares may nauseate more than thrill, but Rabid bites into its story with distinct sophistication and thought-provoking themes.

Here is an extremely violent, sometimes nauseating, picture about a young woman affected with rabies, running around Montreal infecting others. Go to Full Review

Ultimately Rabid boils down to zombified sluts and shock moments but it's an irresistible combination that Cronenberg handles well. Go to Full Review

This disturbing film lacks the stomach-churning claustrophobia of Shivers, but is an altogether slicker affair, and the spiralling, random violence still shocks. Go to Full Review

The M Sep 21 David Cronenberg’s Rabid is one of the directors earlier films with a lot of bite. No pun intended. Rabid is played straight forward as a young woman carries a rabies virus from a botched surgery. The movie has some gnarly moments involving the rabbit victims, attacking people in a shopping mall and various places. What RABID brings to the table is ethos and pathos. The acting is really good all around, particularly by Marilyn Chambers and Frank Moore. This isn’t just a horror film. It’s a tragedy all the way up to the nihilistic ending.. I felt very bad for Rose and hard at the end of this movie similar to the way I fell at the end of dead Ringers. Sadness See more Jake L Sep 18 Great early Cronenberg film with an original story, fine acting, and decent pacing. Not without flaws, but is a breathe of fresh air. There is zombie influence there without feeling like a rehashed zombie flick. See more Cody S. @cody073001 Aug 23 Overall, I liked it, but it was just too slow. I’ve watched movies from this time period that do the slow build to perfection. Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Jaws come to mind. This one didn’t do that for me. The effects were “fun” at best, and the premise itself seems a little silly to me. While I did appreciate that it was unique, a blood sucking appendage from her armpit and her attractiveness lures dudes in, does just seem stupid to me. “Good” at best kind of movie, but definitely far from horrible. Tim Treakle See more thiago s @Thiagostone Jul 29 Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas de terror são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom See more Nick O May 24 It’s such a shame Marilyn Chambers didn’t do more horror movies, cause nobody does creepy and sexy at the same time as good as Marilyn in this 70’s Cronenberg body-horror classic.
