After San Francisco bookie Hal Towers (Henry Morgan) refuses to pay syndicate protection money, his long-time friend, racketeer Dan Gannin (George Raft), finds him dead. Investigating the murder is another close friend, Detective Barney Runson (William Bendix), but Dan refuses to provide Runson with information. Investigating on his own, Dan is close to discovering the head of the syndicate -- only to learn his girlfriend, Robbie (Marilyn Maxwell), may somehow be involved with the organization.
