dave s Rafferty and the Gold Dust Twins is an odd little movie. Rafferty (Alan Arkin) conducts driving examinations and is forced at gunpoint to drive two young women (Sally Kellerman, Mackenzie Phillips) from California to Louisiana. Sure, there are some things that don't ring true, like when Rafferty escapes and then voluntarily reconnects with the kidnappers to continue the journey. Once the initial silliness is dispensed with, it becomes evident that all three characters are suffering and dealing with some nebulous sense of emptiness in their lives. By the time things wrap up, it's actually surprisingly touching. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Not everyone's cup of tea, perhaps, but a brilliant and touching film for those who can catch it's groove. To appreciate it you need to accept: A. This is a totally 1970s movie. Life sucks (in the 70s) nobody even tries to change that because everyone understands that that is just the way its always going to be. B. This is a movie about losers. I don't think anyone apears on screen during the entire course of the film who is not a loser. They are losers when the film starts and they're still losers when the credits roll at the end. But if you're ok with that, the relationships that develop among the 3 primary losers are truly touching. It's never dull. It's well written and extremely well acted. And, as usual MacKenzie phillips steals the show. I loved it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Drab road comedy sad sack driving instructor Alan Arkin is kidnapped by two free spirited women, Sally Kellerman, Mackenzie Phillips, who make him take them from California to New Orleans at gunpoint. Arvin loosens up as the film progresses and willingly helps the wacky ladies. I'm a huge fan of Arkin and I also like Kellerman quite a bit, but this road comedy isn't all that funny or interesting and is only saved by the strong cast, which also includes Alex Rocco, Charles Martin Smith and Harry Dean Stanton. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review s r Fun movie about finding purpose in a hard world. Pauline Kael New Yorker I found it a funny, velvety film, with the kind of tenderness that you can almost feel on your fingertips. Oct 6, 2023 Full Review Philip French Sight & Sound The characters have to fight for our affections and we gradually edge towards an understanding of their hidden wounds. Mar 19, 2020 Full Review Steve Warren The Barb (Atlanta) There's a pleasant warmth to the human relationships shown here, but the emphasis is on comedy mostly stemming from a variety of rip-offs... Rafferty and the Gold Dust Twins won't win any awards, but it's good entertainment. May 8, 2023 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...a compulsively watchable piece of work... Rated: 3/4 Jun 29, 2021 Full Review John Simon Esquire Magazine Everything is absurd, but in a homey, relaxed way. The film treats its unusual occurrences casually, as if they were quite ordinary, which may be less artistic than taking the mundane and perceiving its extraordinary dimensions, but not bad, all the same. Jul 30, 2020 Full Review Jacoba Atlas Los Angeles Free Press Devoid of conscience, this film meanders along at a boring pace, touching every leftover base from other movies along the way.
