Eala D On the level of storytelling, The Raggedy Rawney is one of the best films I've ever seen. It tends to get lukewarm reviews because people don't know what category to put it in: It's not a war film, not science fiction, not really a love story. People like to know how a story will end, and with Raggedy Rawney, they don't have a chance. That is precisely what makes it so amazing as a journey. It lives in its own universe, and the story it tells is psychologically convincing and moving, but simultaneously somehow mythic and eternal. It is nowhere and everywhere, a story of the never-ending human war, and of the efforts of ordinary people to retain some dignity and power over their own lives in the face of cruel violence. None of the characters is perfect. They are not heroes. And yet they are, all of them. They are family. They are us. It is a beautiful film, a modern fable for our times. Make sure you watch it at least once in your life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/01/25 Full Review Henry M There are things I like about Raggedy Rawney. The actors are charming and all seem like real people. It deals with intense issues that people are often afraid to talk about. Bob Hoskins and Zoe Wanamaker are charismatic. However, there is something a little uncanny and unnerving about the film, and I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to a friend. Definitely a weird and interesting journey, and not boring, but also not that impactful morally or emotionally. Cinematography was lackluster, though the environment was pretty and there was a beautiful sunset shot with horses. I would be interested to read about the production of this film, because it strikes me as one that would not have been financed unless George Harrison and Handmade Films stepped in.
