Richard Wallace in collaboration with Stan Laurel, Photography by Floyd Jackman and Jack Roach, Edited by Richard Currier, Titles by H. M. Walker cast: Alta Allen, Max Davidson, James Finlayson, Anita Garvin, Laura Lavarnie, Jerry Mandy, Carl Miller,Mabel Normand Location: Roach Studio, Culver City, California Plot: Ragamuffin (Mabel) worked for a junk dealer (Max Davidson) but is fired. Tries to land in a hospital and lands in home of rich hero (Carl Miller) whom she mistakes for a doctor. Mabel fights off a gold-digger (Anita Garvin) and her mother (Laura Lavarnie) and at the end gets her man. “The first Roach picture I made was Raggedy Rose, directed by Dick Wallace”. – Mabel said. In some places it was reported that the film was directed by F. Richard Jones which is not the case. Many of the gags were recycled from earlier comedy shorts. The character of Raggedy Rose is one who “gets everything second hand even the sunshine” – a real embodiment of the classic “Secondhand Rose”. This comedy was heavily promoted as Mabel’s comeback. The promotion campaign even included the theme as sheet music. In Raggedy Rose, Max Davidson, plays a character which seen in today’s political correct age is more then over the top. If seen within the context of 1926 Max & Mabel make a rather funny team. The dream sequence is lovely as is Mabel. The gag of the auto completely falling apart with a little impact – used here for the first time by Roach. It was later use often by comics like Laurel and Hardy. Mabel is identified with the “Keystone Pie” and now with the “Roach Collapsing Car”. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
