Richard J I was born at the end of the 70's and it turns out almost all of my favorite programs fell in or around 1987. My favorite TV program that still sticks with me today is a little known NBC series called Rags To Riches. Don't get me wrong,The Charmings was important too,but Rags has my heart. It was a mid season replacement and premiered in March of 87. It premiered on Sunday evening across from Murder She Wrote. It peaked at the top of the Nielson Ratings for the premiere. A huge win for NBC. They even aired it again 3 months later due to popularity. In fairness,NBC pushed the show and promoted it heavily. It won a second season, but NBC,over that summer, had switched it's weekly run to Friday nights against Full House and Beauty and the Beast. The break out series lost viewers and steam. By December of 87 the decision to pull it was made. January of 1988 the series ended. Re-runs of season 2 went through the summer of 88 and the last showing was September 11th of 88. The pilot movie was about a self-made millionaire who adopted 6 orphan girls to put a buisness deal back on track. He ends up adopting them. The series dropped the cast to 5 girls. The character Nina was written out,and the explanation came several episodes in. The show was set in 1961 and was a musical. It smartly took songs from the time period and rewrote lyrics to attune to the plot. This is what really seems to stick with people of my generation. The Show starred veteran actors Joe Bologna and Douglas Seale. It introduced us to up and coming actresses Heidi Zeigler,Tisha Campbell, and Kimiko Gelman. Blanca Degarr,Heather McAdam, and Bridget Michelle rounded out the cast. The show was heavily promoted. TV guide had photo advertisement for 8 of the 20 episodes, Two Saturday Morning Cartoon lineups hosted by the cast, and even placement in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade on the Cabbage Patch Kid Float. The cast was also invited to perform at the Easter Seals Telethon live just days before the premiere. The second season even had a special 2hr movie length episode. The cast was also quite diverse. It was cool before it needed to be. It also was notoriously famous for having an episode interrupted just over half way through for the rescue of Baby Jessica (a baby who fell down a well in Texas). I myself was really upset over that interruption for years. I hope everyone who has love for this show will write a little something about it,or share a memory. It's not a show for everyone, but still has a loyal following. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/24 Full Review Audience Member Finally released on DVD! I loved this movie as a kid and love it now! Forget Glee, this movie/tv show started it and has been a big influence in my love of '60s music and oldies to this day. Very entertaining and great selection of music!
