M.V. Moorhead Less Hat, Moorhead 03/19/2021
It has the polished surface of, say, a Hallmark movie, but in its low-key, leisurely way it's a tough, honest and unsentimental take on parenting, and the performances of Janelle Snow as Hannah and Amanda Powell as Jules are moving. Go to Full Review

J S Aug 4 This film dangerously misrepresents a known genetic variance, falsely linking it to violence and monstrosity. The child is dehumanized—likened to an animal—and his death is portrayed as a relief, allowing the adoptive mothers to finally live in peace. It perpetuates harmful, outdated stereotypes, ignoring that this genetic difference is more accurately associated with neurodivergence and accompanying developmental challenges—not aggression or criminality. The main character is neglectful and borderline abusive to her spouse, and their relationship lacks any emotional depth or credibility. The plot takes a bizarre turn when the son, despite a juvenile record, is accepted into an elite military branch—something highly implausible—and dies during a mission. He’s posthumously declared a hero, while the mothers end the film literally in heaven, happily living their dream life now that their “problem” child is dead and out of the way. This narrative sends a chilling and harmful message: peace comes only when the neurodivergent child is gone. Shame on the director, screenwriter, and actors who contributed to the demonization of an already misunderstood population—one in which neurodivergence is common and deserving of compassion, not condemnation.
