Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer is not an especially imaginative tale, and the animation is at times lifeless. Go to Full Review
Michael Blowen Boston Globe 03/18/2013
So incompetently crafted that it makes the Saturday-morning cartoons seem like Disney classics. Go to Full Review

Wherever she goes, she leaves a rainbow trail. As a matter of fact, the film has rainbows everywhere. I stopped counting at 247 or so. Go to Full Review

An exemplar of the state of children animation from that era if I ever saw one. Not a compliment, that. Go to Full Review

Noisy, subpar cartoon adventure with lots of peril. Go to Full Review

The animation is wretched, and the whole thing is so sickly sweet as to be almost nauseating. Go to Full Review

a a 03/24/2024 This movie had a huge impact on my childhood. It gave me hope and inspiration as a young person. There's nothing like a film featuring an 80s animated icon to pump up children's emotions and show them that anything is possible! Just believe in yourself and do what's right! See more B G 02/12/2024 This movie is nostalgia gold! So many fun characters, catchy songs and a decent plot. This franchise is just waiting for a re-boot! See more Erin 02/24/2023 I lived this movie as a kid and I still love to watch it with my kids. It was magical and sweet. It has good lessons and friendship. I wanted her horse rainbow so bad! Still a classic good childhood memory. See more 05/24/2022 Just watched last night. Stunning backgrounds and effects. Fantastic animation (Starlight always was a stunner). As you expect most of the voices and music are terrible but the main characters and main songs are awesome. The plot is insane, the pacing is poor (slow sections drag), the villains mustache-twirling. Who cares? It's a GORGEOUS film with THREE flying horces (one of which sings and talks and another which talks...and is a jet-powered robot), and two kid protagonists with magical color and crystal powers (via wrist-mounted crystal gun) who take on the maniacal princess who wants to steal the diamond though which all light in the universe passes. It's fantasy but actually more sci-fi/fantasy this time around and between the laser guns, crystal gun, rainbow power, flying horses, chases, escapes, infiltrating a space castle, and insanely catchy main musical themes and breathtaking art and animation it's hard not o adore this film if you are a fan of 80's films and animation. It clearly had a massive budget bump from the TV show. See more 11/28/2021 If you liked Rainbow Brite as a child, or if you like insane children's movies from the 80s, you will love this movie.
