harry r A movie about a mixed-up woman with trophies above her bed torn between two men. She has her sights on one, I wonder how long it will last. All the time they are on the hunt for the enchantress. Who or what is the enchantress? It was good to see Sabu but it is no wonder why he did not do well in Hollywood, he was typecast. The cast was very good with a poor script. The values expressed by the characters are less than admirable. The end is supposed to make it all right, but based on what happened in the movie, I think our view of everyone is fairly accurate. I was surprised that I had not seen this movie when i was younger, now i know why. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review kevin w Jack Hawkins is a hunter. British. Kills things. And an old guy. Bob Mitchum is a trapper. American. Doesn't kill. Slightly younger. Conflict. They're different, see? And Elsa Martinelli is the babe (dare I say it, "the bone" ) they're bickering over. Everything else in this movie is just trimmings, although it's nice to see Sabu again. They should've named the film, "Tiff", not " Rampage". Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Dull jungle story about great white hunter Robert Mitchum being hired by Jack Hawkins to catch a rare breed of panther in Malaysia. Hawkins girlfriend, Elsa Martinelli, also joints the two hunters on their expedition, which leads to jealously and melodrama. Directed by journeyman director Phil Karlson, the film is competently made and the cast is solid, but the script is boring and the romantic tensions are uninvolving. The age differences between Martinelli and Mitchum is a bit questionable, but is not at all believable for Hawkins, unless you want to believe her to secretly be a gold digger. Overall, this film is only made watchable by the presence of Mitchum. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Good cast, mediocre script, indifferent results. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member no tarzan or african queen but descent jungle pix Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member The more of Phil Karlson films I explore, the more I am beginning to think he is truly under-appreciated filmmaker who just doesn't get the credit he deserves. Rampage is the story of a world-renowned animal trapper (Robert Mitchum) who is commissioned to track down, The Enchantress, a mythical Malaysian tiger/panther hybrid. He is teamed with an old but skilled hunter (Jack Hawkins) and his young, beautiful wife (Elsa Martinelli). This film is full of great relationship dynamics between these three to the point that the actually hunt is really just a backdrop for the deadly game of carnal desires. From the onset it's clear that their is sexual tension between Mitchum and the young woman, making no bones about the obvious attraction. Jack Hawkins character's plight is by far the most interesting aspect of the film. This man whose skill and dominance in his profession slowly decays away due to father time; wanting nothing more but to prove that he still has what it takes, while also dealing with the fear of losing his wife to the skilled-trapper in Mitchum. While the film centers around the hunt for the tiger, the real meat comes in the cat and mouse game which both Mitchum and Hawkins play for this woman's affection. I guess some may have a problem with how Elsa Martinelli's character portrays woman-an individual whose attraction to power and expertise makes her question her love and respect for Hawkins. I personally don't see a problem with it, as the script covers its basis and demonstrating that from a young age this Hawkins character is all she has ever known, which explains why power means so much to her. The script is good if not great, loaded with lots of great innuendos and subtle aggressive commentary between the two men, also slightly commenting on the simple fact that man is the most dangerous creature of all.
