Nikki P I'm SO disappointed at the blunt ending. The main character's story was left hanging to the point that I thought the Hulu app malfunctioned. Potential wasted. Lots of messages but no deeper meaning to all of the pain. Like a song with no tonic (coming home) note to it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/10/24 Full Review Richard H I agree with some of the other reviews that the movie is a little slow and would have been better if it was shorter. But I thought Alan Cumming and Katie Holmes and Derek Luke gave good performances. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/14/24 Full Review Kathy K I wanted to like this movie because I like Katie Holmes but the movie was just too slow moving. The main girl that was victimized is not believable as an actress. Her words seemed forced and not natural. Maybe it was the wording of the script that made the actress seem unbelievable? I just couldn't emphasize with her, even though her situation was sad. I stopped watching it halfway through because it was just too boring. Maybe it would have been a good lifetime movie but not a feature film. I was so disappointed with this film. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/08/24 Full Review Ace R This is a good movie. It has parts that are a little slow, but for the most part it keeps your attention. It has a good message that I like. I recommend that you see this movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/24 Full Review Victoria G Very disappointing. The storyline is clear in the first five minutes of the film, the rest is slow moving molasses. The acting is poor with a few exceptions. It was so boring I had to end the torture early. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/24 Full Review John A A bit uneven in tone however Katie Holmes' latest feature does stir up some resonance here and there. Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's a deeply moving film I liked a lot. Apr 24, 2023 Full Review Katie Rife RogerEbert.com Unfortunately, none of the movie’s good intentions ever pan out. Rated: 2/4 Apr 17, 2023 Full Review Owen Gleiberman Variety As appealing a setting as this is for a movie, I couldn’t help but feel that the premise doesn’t quite parse. Apr 17, 2023 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue The film provides multiple angles to sympathize with Benita, except that the uneven screenplay feels too deliberately paced and narratively disjointed to maximize its impact. Feb 23, 2024 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix Rare Objects is a boring slog of a film with a flimsy plot and main characters who sound very phony. Katie Holmes has directed yet another cinematic misfire in which she's cast herself as the star. Her awkward over-acting in Rare Objects does not help. Sep 1, 2023 Full Review Russ Simmons KKFI-FM (Kansas City) It's well-meaning and warmly embraces its flawed characters, but the rambling structure of "Rare Objects" prevents it from achieving much of an emotional impact.
