Katie Holmes
Actress Katie Holmes found fame as a teenager before weathering a steady diet of tabloid storms as an adult. A native of Toledo, Ohio, she began acting in school productions and was cast at 16 in Ang Lee's drama "The Ice Storm" (1997). She began getting interest from casting agents, but insisted on finishing high school first. The actress famously auditioned for "Dawson's Creek" (The WB, 1998-2003) by videotape so that she didn't have to miss school. Kevin Williamson cast her as Joey Potter, the object of affection of both James Van Der Beek's Dawson and Joshua Jackson's Pacey. The show developed a loyal following and Holmes was soon one of the up-and-coming actresses in Hollywood. On the big-screen, she starred with Sarah Polley in Doug Liman's "Go" (1999) and had supporting roles opposite Cate Blanchett and Keanu Reeves in "The Gift" (2000) and Michael Douglas in "Wonder Boys" (2000). She stepped up to top billing with "Pieces of April" (2003), playing a young woman trying to bring her estranged family together for Thanksgiving dinner. After starring in Forest Whitaker's romantic comedy, "First Daughter" (2004), she stepped into a significantly darker world. The actress played Rachel Dawes, the love interest of Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne in Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins" (2005). Her life then became the subject of intense scrutiny by the entertainment and tabloid press when she began dating film superstar Tom Cruise in 2005. The pair married in 2006 and their union proved endlessly fascinating to the public. On screen, she starred with Diane Keaton and Queen Latifah in "Mad Money" (2008), as well as the remake of the horror film "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" (2010). She garnered attention for playing Jacqueline Kennedy in the "The Kennedys" (2010). The miniseries became the subject of a firestorm of criticism about its historical accuracy before it even aired. On a lighter note, she played Adam Sandler's wife in the comedy "Jack and Jill" (2011). Holmes divorced Cruise in 2012, but first the end of her marriage and later her relationship with actor Jamie Foxx kept her in the headlines. She continued working regularly, appearing with Meryl Streep in "The Giver" (2014) and opposite Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds in "Woman in Gold" (2014). She added a recurring role on the Liev Schrieber drama "Ray Donovan" (Showtime, 2013- ). She also returned to the role of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in "The Kennedys: After Camelot" (2017). Director Steven Soderbergh cast the actress alongside Adam Driver, Channing Tatum, and Daniel Craig in his crime caper "Logan Lucky" (2017). Returning to the horror genre, Holmes starred in "Brahms: The Boy II" (2019), the second of William Brent Bell's films about a disfigured man living in the walls of a mansion.
