Christopher Campbell Cinematical A must-see for fans of non-fiction film, fans of the 40th president, and even those critical of the man for whatever reason. Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 9, 2011 Full Review Kimberly Gadette Indie Movies Online While it's not surprising to see the president's son Ron picking his way through a potential minefield, wanting both to celebrate his father and address his failings honestly, what's the filmmaker's rationale? Ralaine R Well worth your time for a recap of history, and how strong leadership always matters. Mix into that two soul mates who navigate their way through and out of Hollywood into the dog eat dog world of politics, the movie transports one from the early 20th century to his passing. Well done and bring a Kleenex. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/07/24 Full Review Jim P Wonderful script and cast. Told from the perspective of a Soviet agent assigned to study Reagan, this plot device adds interesting narration and moves the film along well. It's well worth seeing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/06/24 Full Review Audience Member Great film! Dennis Quaid was perfect. Difficult to get political about this one, but some just can’t help themselves. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/05/24 Full Review Danielle I Great movie! We just saw it last night! A bunch of great actors in it! Such a great story! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/05/24 Full Review Elaine W Saw the movie yesterday. It was wonderful. Brought back memories of history that happened during his presidency. When the movie was over the applause in the theater was amazing. Loved it!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/04/24 Full Review Bob F As a lifelong fan of Ronald Reagan, I was disappointed by this movie, but I do not feel as though I wasted my time or money watching the film. What I did not like: 1. The flow of the plot lacked dynamic variation between excitement, disappointment, joy, and sorrow. At best, the filmmakers sought to show a highlight reel of Ronald Reagan rather than a compelling film about his life and legacy. At worst, the filmmakers portrayed Ronald Reagan as a political messiah for the US which simply feels icky as an American. 2. Generally speaking, this movie was over-acted. While there were some great performances, Penelope Ann Miller's representation of Nancy Reagan, for example, was overacted to the point that it overshadowed her excellent visual representation of the former First Lady. 3. There was a glaring lack of nuance. Again, I am a fan of Reagan, but glossing over and ignoring many of his failures or potential failures as a man or as a politician does a true disservice to those that wish to enjoy this film. Any good biopic will not ignore the shortcomings of the subject, and I feel like this movie did exactly that for the sake of protecting Reagan's image. 4. As a highlight reel of Reagan's life and administration, I do not feel as though I gained any new insight into who and what made Ronald Reagan the man that he was. Sure, his mother, his wife, and his faith were important to him, but this movie offers a cheap effort in explaining exactly why those things made him who he was. Furthermore, the highlight reel nature of this movie made the plot difficult to follow at times. 5. Building off my last statement, I feel as though the makers of this film sought to give insight about Reagan to a younger audience (or at least a group of people who know or care less about Reagan that I do). However, by only showing highlights of his life and career and not building Reagan as a character in the movie, the film is better served as a nostalgic depiction of a better time that is now gone for those that lived through the 80s and can remember many of the depicted events. 6. If anything about this movie was subtle, it was the implicit references to modern politics. Obviously, there is a strong connection between politics of the 1980s and the 2020s; however, some comments and interactions portrayed in the film seem to be directed at a 2024 audience and not a depiction of actual conversations and issues of the 1980s. 7. The makers of this film did not display the art of "showing, not saying". The "Tear down this wall scene" was cringy. The cutbacks to the speech writer as Reagan delivers the line felt like they were trying to hype up the movie's audience. It was just a bit odd. What I did like: 1. Visually, this was a very nice movie. There was great attention to detail throughout the film. 2. It is impossible to watch this film and not feel just a little more patriotic than you did going in. I had more negative than positive to say because I went in with my expectations set higher than the film could deliver. Had my expectations been set appropriately, I think I could have enjoyed the movie significantly more than I did. Again, I do not think I wasted time or money watching this movie, but it unfortunately is not top-tier cinematography in my opinion. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/03/24 Full Review Read all reviews
