Wendy Ide Observer (UK) It's affecting enough, with both Harris and Stevenson capturing the wrenching, protracted grief of not knowing, but I found myself wishing that the film had maintained a sense of mystery. Rated: 3/5 Sep 16, 2024 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) Sophisticated screenwriting and two knockout central turns are the main draws for this tense family drama about a missing daughter returned. Rated: 4/5 Sep 13, 2024 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian Though a little mannered, the film has intelligence and force. Rated: 3/5 Sep 10, 2024 Full Review Manuela Lazic Cineuropa Gilbert doesn’t fully exploit the moral and emotional quandary that John and Mary are put in, as if the filmmaker were too nervous to get her hands dirty and have her characters be truly torn apart by this impossible situation. Nov 22, 2024 Full Review Chris Wasser Sunday Independent (Ireland) Reawakening sometimes behaves like a daytime soap opera, stagey and overblown in places, and frustratingly hollow in others. Committed performances make all the difference in this watchable yet curiously unsettled feature. Rated: 3/5 Sep 13, 2024 Full Review Brian Viner Daily Mail (UK) Writer-director Virginia Gilbert doesn't quite succeed in keeping this wholly credible, but the excellent performances keep it on track. J H Not easy viewing. The ongoing trauma for the parents of their teenage child going missing is heartbreaking. Their efforts at “normality” scarcely disguise their pain. The arrival of the new Claire is disconcerting - her own family situation not clear. My take away thoughts were around families and their complexities. The reality is that precious relationships can break down - sometimes so sadly forever. In this story daughter, Claire, is ultimately revealed as being dead. The Mum draws on her love for her daughter and shares expanded love with new Claire. It is not true transference because she knows new Claire is not her daughter - but their relationship gives a positive foundation for their future lives with their individual knowledge of daughter Claire central to that. And the Dad? He has to get his head round what has happened and his wife and new Claire’s thinking. He is a man of regret and forgiveness and in turn opens his heart to new Claire too. The film leaves unanswered questions about new Claire’s life and whether through strength gained in her “new family”, if she wishes to do so and if they still exist, she makes contact with her original family. And what would the ramifications of that be? This is a movie that made me think in a lingering and at times discomforting way. Which one of us parents is perfect and how would we cope if our child was estranged or lost? I suspect that pain, loss, and horrific wonderings would overwhelm, with existence for a long time before we could ever, if ever, truly live. The love for our child would be in our every breath. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/12/24 Full Review Helen D Acting impeccable but it was easy to anticipate the ending and I really wished for a further twist. The ending didn’t satisfy. It was still entertaining though and I love Erin Doherty as an actress. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/26/24 Full Review Elaine P Reawakening is the wrong title as both my daughter and I fell alseep and had to keep shaking ourselves awake, waiting and waiting for the events of interest to begin. Sadly they never did begin. This I can say is the worst film I've ever seen, so bad I wanted to ask for my money back. I only chose it due to the names of the actors, and it's beyond me how they signed up for this film. I've seen far better tv films with similar subject matter. I wanted to leave after just 30 minutes but was persuaded to stay hoping it would improve. Sadly it never did. A 14 year old disappears, and 10 years later someone claims to be her. But the father who doesn't believe it's her fails to go to the police to get her a DNA test, and the mother then claims she always knew it wasn't her, but seemingly wants to play a game pretending it is her daughter. Totally illogical and desperately boring. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/25/24 Full Review Read all reviews
