From Zack Snyder, the filmmaker behind 300, Man of Steel, and Army of the Dead, comes REBEL MOON, an epic science-fantasy event decades in the making. When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors -- outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed. Read More Read Less

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire proves Zack Snyder hasn't lost his visual flair, but eye candy isn't enough to offset a storyline made up of various sci-fi/fantasy tropes.

Even if Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire borrows heavily from other sci-fi stories, it's still entertaining -- and often visually dazzling.

Robert Levin Newsday An unfortunate “Star Wars” imitation. Rated: 1.5/4 Jan 31, 2024 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) The story is a derivative mess that feels as though it was assembled from bits of plot picked off the carcasses of other, better films, and glued together with brain-numbing, pace-killing chunks of exposition. Rated: 2/5 Dec 24, 2023 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times There are endless hunks of spoken exposition. There is a lot of space travel. A great many uninteresting people are introduced. By the first hour all narrative drive has slackened into a limp connecting thread. Rated: 2/5 Dec 23, 2023 Full Review Calum Cooper Flick Feast This is a film so charmless, derivative, and unbearably slow in pace and spectacle that it beggars belief. It doesn’t just defy entertainment – it’s the antithesis of the word. Rated: 1/5 Jul 19, 2024 Full Review James Preston Poole The Cosmic Circus Rebel Moon – Part 1: A Child of Fire is kind of a mess, but a delicious one, predicated on if you can see the potential in the universe and forthcoming longer cut or not. I see the vision. Jul 13, 2024 Full Review Ankit Ojha Cinema Elite From the operatic bombast of its characters’ theatrical enunciation to the hard-rock chic aesthetic of its action set pieces, “Rebel Moon” boasts the greatest hits of its director’s stylistic flourishes. Wes LP Looks to be the beginning of a pretty cool and entertaining franchise. Action sequences are downright awesome! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/30/23 Full Review KEITH A Whilst Synder dasels us with his visuals and commendable action sequences, the story is entirely too long and suffers from pacing issues. Also, some of the performances come as a little flat. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/21/23 Full Review HB Please see this movie for yourself. It’s shot well the action is good and I want to know what happens next. Of course with all Zack Snyder’s movies the visual story is stunning!! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/19/23 Full Review rex c Totally fun! Every thing you would/should want in a sci/fi crazy adventure! The Justice League was formed by the end of the first half, without any of them having super powers. Good time!! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/19/23 Full Review Jeramiah G Zach Snyder's Star Wars, (coughs) I mean Rebel Moon, this is a good sci-fi film, it's got elements of genre blending, elements of a Viking/ Norse epic, a Western, Seven Samurai, the Magnificent Seven, and Zacks version of Star Wars. This isn't the same thing as Star Wars it has a different vibe. It is a quality Sci-fi film with a good mature story, it has an epic score. Two times I could picture Darth Vader coming into the next scene based upon the audio design. The visuals are great. The story is great. I took a road trip to the Bay Theater to see this in theaters and I'm glad I did. I really liked it. I want to see the R rated version. It feels like some important elements of the story could be expanded upon. There are hints that a sex scene may have been cut. Overall, I like the tone, the visual style and the audio design. I wish it was available in a larger theater. The small theater / screen didn't show it in the size and scale I would have preferred to see. This needs to be shown on the larger screens to a mass audience. This is a solid franchise starter. It's a quality movie. I wish it was available in more theaters and on larger screens as it deserves. This should have been a wider release. I am glad I took the road trip to see it in theaters. I can wait to see the full R rated version of the film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/17/23 Full Review Eriq A visual masterpiece, a narrative snoozefest.
