Audience Member Red Rover (AKA The Haunting Within) is a very hit and miss horror film that is painfully slow at times making it almost an endurance exercise to sit through. For the first hour of the film practically nothing happens bar the films set up which all happens within the first 5 minutes. Psychiatrist William Baldwin inherits a house, left by his late mother, on a remote Island off the coast of Canada. He intends to bring is troubled sister to the house, who witnessed her mother burning to death as a child, in order try and help her overcome her depression and mental problems. Cue the next 50 minutes of the two of them exploring the house and doing therapy sessions. This is incredibly boring stuff bar the odd appearance of a ghostly boy, completely devoid of plot development, suspense and tension and makes you wonder just what the director was trying to achieve. Admittedly the film picks up in the last half hour or so when the spookiness becomes more central to the plot. There is still zero suspense or tension, mainly due to the awful Celtic music soundtrack, but the plot becomes a lot more interesting as the spooky happenings begin to be explained. The last 5 minutes are good with quite a surprising ending that works well. Sadly it doesn't make up for the painfully slow first hour of the film. The acting is quite good, William Baldwin is decent and Jodi Lyn O' Keefe is ok. There are some good scenic shots and the old house looks well but, as mentioned, the soundtrack is terrible and robs the film of all tension. Red Rover is watchable and isn't the worst horror film out there but the incredibly slow first hour is almost too hard to take but the last half hour is quite interesting. A very average horror film. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member (Called 'The Haunting Within' in the UK.) Troubled Kylie and her brother Will have inherited a house on Sutton Island. The locals tell Will that the island has a spooky past, and no-one has been in that house for 80 years. No-one else dares to go there. Once the duo get across to the island, Kylie instantly feels they're not alone. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Not good enough for a modern supernatural thriller. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Puppies and horror are not a good mix :{ Red Rover (aka The Hauntin Within) is the tale of two siblings played by William Baldwin and Jodi Lyn O'Keefe, they inherit an old house on an island, unknown to them the house is cursed and everything is not as it seems. This movie is actually better than it looks and sounds,it was very picturesque and the house and estate looked creepy and eerie. The horror is slow and subtle, like the old horror movies and although i did not find it scary it did make my daughter have chills down her back quite a few times. If you like your horror bloody and gory then you probably wont enjoy it but if you enjoy movies like The Haunting or The Others its worth a watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member The story of a man and his retarded sister, apparantly. 10 minutes in I wanted both of them to die a horrible death - along with whoever was responsible for this movie.
