Audience Member The scenery alone makes this worth watching, as I've never seen such a lively and colorful depiction of these pastoral settings of south central Russia during the late Soviet era. The characters are incredibly genuine, the story meaningful, and the mood is altogether good-humored, though we know from the outset that our character has a criminal past that won't quite disappear. This film is a rare gem, a real pleasure to discover. I watched it only because Rainer Werner Fassbinder put it on his top 10 list, and I wasn't disappointed. Now I look forward to seeing more films from this Shukshin fellow. Absolutely the best Soviet film I have seen. Strong. Sincere. The director of the film, Vasilij Suksin, is the author of the story and plays also the main role of the released prisoner who wants to start a new life.
