Ben Kenigsberg New York Times The journey would be enough for a film; it might have been even more compelling had it been left to stand on its own. "Red Dot on the Ocean" portrays the story as triumph over adversity and wayward youth. Oct 23, 2014 Full Review Daphne Howland Village Voice Rutherford returns to Annapolis after 309 days and 27,000 miles alone at sea little-changed, at least according to this account, and, so, neither are we. Audience Member Fascinating footage of Matt's journey aboard the boat interspersed with interviews of those who knew him best. The map graphics added to the understanding and appreciation of his amazing accomplishment. Kudos to all those involved in the production of this worthwhile movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member This is an inspiring, exciting movie which combines both dramatic footage of the amazing journey of Matt Rutherford around the Americas with narrative about his personal struggles as a youth overcoming many challenges. As someone who has done some sailing as well as working with troubled youth for many years, this movie struck a chord with me. Anyone who doubts the strength of the human spirit to overcome adversity should see this movie - you leave with a tremendous boost of positive energy! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member This well-done documentary not only contains great footage of Matt Rutherford's record-breaking sailing adventure around the Americas, it is an inspiring story of his ability to overcome ADHD, drugs, and his family's involvement in a religious cult. Told with humor and frankness, this is an amazing story and a must-see. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member A remarkable account of a great adventure at sea. Matthew Rutherford is a genuine and fearless sailor. The documentary is beautiful, interesting, and well done. Well worth watching by young and old who love the sea or need inspiration to move forward courageously no matter the odds. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a remarkable film, one of the best sailing documentaries ever produced. The story of Matt Rutherford's epic solo journey around the continents of North and South America chronicles one of the most amazing voyages ever recorded. What makes this story so engrossing, though, is that the sailing part is only half the tale, and arguably not even the most unlikely part. Matt's childhood was a nightmare, a brutal combination of drugs, cults, depression, learning disabilities and, ultimately, prison. And his difficult, winding path from troubled kid to bold adventurer and record-setting sailor is truly an inspirational tale that this terrific documentary captures well. Highly recommended... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member There was never a dull moment in this movie that follows Matt Rutherford on his nonstop!!! journey around the Americas. Really really enjoyed watching it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
