Laurence Boyce Little White Lies A brave attempt to do something different. Revolution may not be entirely successful, but it is made with heart. Rated: 2/5 Jan 20, 2012 Full Review Patrick Peters Empire Magazine Voutas offers a sex comedy salted with satirical comment on Chinese society. Rated: 3/5 Jan 15, 2012 Full Review Rick Groen Globe and Mail Well, consider the job half done: Sexy it ain't, but, once in a while, you will crack a smile. Rated: 2.5/4 Jan 13, 2012 Full Review Philip French Observer (UK) Not surprisingly, Voutas's inept movie has yet to find a Chinese distributor. Surprisingly, it has found one here. Jan 22, 2012 Full Review Tom Dawson Total Film It's light-hearted rather than provocative, though the gag about the elderly customers' love-making stamina is a bit of a flop. Audience Member The critics on Rotten Tomatoes also gave this movie bad reviews. However, it's pretty typical of an American audience that reviews foreign films. They tend to get lost by the English subtitles and cannot comprehend the situational humor that is in non-English speaking movies. It clearly eludes them. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Aussie writer/director Sam Voutas' Chinese sex comedy has plenty of heart but lacks two vital ingredients - the sex and comedy. The heavy western influence in the filmmaking works well and the lead has an amiable enthusiasm, does contain some nice social commentary although overall it's just too tame. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member Full review on thegeekshow.co.uk The story focuses on the trails and tribulations of Shunzi and Lili as they try to run their controversial business without any real idea of what they're getting into. The plot is compelling and fun, but the execution and charm are what elevates the film beyond its concept into something truly fantastic. Every opportunity is taken to parody and reference China's confusing legislation, from how to apply for a Sex Shop Permit, to the glaring gaze of the local 'Neighbourhood Watchman'. Red Light Revolution is one of those gems where everything works - from the funny and tasteful dialogue about sex, to the strong female lead who has no interest in the clichéd romantic back-seat, and the whole film makes an excellent statement about the nature of 'Face' in China. The film delivers everything it promises and then some. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
