THR Staff Hollywood Reporter A heart-warming story based on a distinctly unique premise, sparkling comedy which always has a latent heart tug, superlative performances, an excellent script, top notch production and direction. Dec 17, 2021 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Stanwyck turns in a fine performance. MacMurray is impressive as the serious-minded prosecutor, but loosens up for the comedy stretches. Nov 12, 2007 Full Review Geoff Andrew Time Out Playing superbly on the personae of his leads, Leisen creates a movie of warmth and immense style, which never quite trips over into excessive sentimentality. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills That modestly budgeted political satire was a sleeper hit with audiences as well as critics...excellent 1940 seriocomedy... Jul 31, 2023 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins With an unusually bittersweet conclusion (censors may have had something to do with that), the film is pleasant, irresistible, and unforgettable. Jay W This film has all the, forgive the pun, hallmarks of a traditional Christmas rom com. You have two characters that seem like polar opposites. MacMurray is the prosecutor assigned to convict Stanwyck. When the trial is delayed until after Christmas, MacMurray posts bail for Stanwyck and agrees to take her home for Christmas. Given that set-up, what do you think is going to happen? Well, all that stuff happens plus some shenanigans with a cow. Clearly this film was paving the way for cliched holiday movies for decades to come. And to their credit, this one is very well done. It is well acted; the two leads have believable chemistry. And the conflict between them feels real, it does not feel contrived for sake of pointless drama. A good movie to put on at a high brow ugly Christmas sweater party. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/21/24 Full Review James E A delight fun romp with Barbara and Fred. They are at their top of their game plus a plot that will keep you glued to the screen. A true hidden 5 star film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/27/24 Full Review Joel H Part courtroom drama, part romantic comedy, part holiday movie, Remember the Night has a lot to offer. It helps that Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray are both likeable, and they work so well together. This movie starts off fairly lighthearted, which I expected, but I was surprised when it took a more serious tone. However, the tonal shift felt natural and moved in step with the path of the plot. I may prefer the Stanwyck & MacMurray pairing in Double Indemnity, and I’m not sure if the brief Christmas section qualifies this as a Christmas movie, but I don’t think I’ll forget Remember the Night. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/10/24 Full Review Mike D Heart warming film. The themes are very contemporary. Stanwyck is always mesmerizing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/21/23 Full Review Tim O Classic Christmas Canon flick in our household. Mismatched couple makes the journey across country, to their roots and back. Standard tropes, well delivered. Most modern films would be lucky to be *half* as entertaining as this film was 83 years ago. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/18/23 Full Review Shadowman4710 A rather charming, if quite dated romantic comedy set during the Christmas season. Barbara Stanwick and Fred MacMurray had a great deal of charisma on-screen, which is readily apparent here. I'd say it's a good one for those interested in older films using Holidays as a backdrop.
