J S Feb 4 The best that I can say about this movie is that it was not offensive -- frequently. Aside from this feeling like a knockoff of at least a few other films that I could mention, most of the acting was so bad that one couldn't even suspend disbelief long enough to go along with most of the very far fetched and/or creepy incongruities of the plot (for example, the main character's apparent best friend is also his regular prostitute hookup). Brendan Fraser himself mostly made slightly sad frog faces, from which we are to assume that he has grown attached to a child being psychologically tortured by her mother. Oh well, I enjoyed the popcorn and my date. See more Jim W @Moleculist Feb 3 One of the main questions I ask of any movie or streaming show now is: do I like any of the people in it? If not, I'm done. This movie not only presents all characters as relatable and likeable but it's also truly unique and original and in no way formulaic or predictable. There is an immensely powerful twist at one point, and there are many echoing themes that are so impressive. The acting is superlative, and the timing of delivery of lines and emotions is amazing. So often now we get films delivered at a high paced annoying dialog, with no space for the film to emotionally breathe. The direction here is fantastic, and it lets you really feel the acting. Somehow this film reminds me of the great film Safety Not Guaranteed. Having spent a decent amount of time in Japan it was also wonderful to experience the sights and culture.
