      Critics Consensus

Chow Yun-fat makes his dubious English-language debut in The Replacement Killers, a stylish but muddled knockoff of the Hong Kong shoot-em-ups that earned the star his international renown. Read critic reviews

Fuqua was doing his best possible imitation of John Woo here, but all it did was invite comparisons to much better action films.

Pretty cool. I had heard about this film, but I was never really interested in it until I found out that Chow Yun-Fat was the protagonist, and that John Woo was involved with this film (I think he's a producer on this). This isn't as good as Hard Boiled, but then again, nothing is. Anyway, Antoine Fuqua does a good job directing here, as usual, and the supporting cast of Michael Rooker and especially Mira Sorvino, is great. Sorvino is simply fantastic here. Check this out.

After his mob leader's son is killed by a police officer in a shootout, the leader sends Chow Yun-Fat on a mission to kill the cop's 7 year-old son in retaliation, eye-for-an-eye. But as the boy appears in the hands of his father seen by Fat through the crosshairs of a sniper rifle, Fat bulks at killing the boy. His bosses are none too pleased at his change of heart and send in "replacement" assassins, (one of whom is played by none other than Danny Trejo) to kill Fat as well as his family over in China. With the help of master forger Mira Sorvino who is convincing in her strong female role, quite capable of taking care of herself but forced by circumstances to ally with Lee, he must get back into China to face his nemesis. Chow Yun-Fat is as excellent as ever in this movie, playing his 'killer with a conscience' role once again with his usual style and talent so if you love the sound of machine guns, and Chow Yun-Fat then this, is the movie for you. I also loved the music in the background and the scenes in the temple.

Antoine Fuqua isn't the strongest filmmakers around but he tends to make okay action films. This film had potential but the overall film just lacks the Hong Kong style it seeks to bring to western audiences. Chow Yun-Fat is the strongest part of the film, like most of his action films, he has that presence that engages every scene he is in. The Corruptor might be frowned upon by critics but Yun-Fat owns that film, he gives an insane Cage performance. I would have liked this film to go a little more crazy, Antoine Fuqua feels intent to have the material mediocre for some reason. THe action feels a little weak and character development is none existent. I enjoy the tone of the film and the action scenes but I can't recommend it for anything else. 15-07-2018.
