Trying to get out of her contract with her obnoxious manager, Freddie (Ron Leibman), country singer Jake Farris (Dolly Parton) bets that she can turn the next person she sees into a Nashville-style crooner. Unfortunately, the next person she sees is cocky New York City cabbie Nick (Sylvester Stallone), who can't sing a note. Undaunted, she brings her new protégé to her tiny Tennessee hometown to train him in all things country, while her ex-boyfriend (Tim Thomerson) tries to win her back.

Variety Staff Variety Effortlessly living up to its title, Rhinestone is as artificial and synthetic a concoction as has ever made its way to the screen. Mar 26, 2009 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times The center part of the film -- the country "training" sessions -- could have been fun if they'd been written with a satiric edge. Unfortunately, they seem to have been written with a blunt instrument. Rated: 1/4 Oct 23, 2004 Full Review Janet Maslin New York Times As Mr. Stallone wends his way through barnyards and country cabins, the material retains some comic potential. But as the inevitable romance springs up between the two stars, their lack of rapport becomes all too noticeable. May 20, 2003 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Watching Stallone attempt to be funny is about as painful as passing kidney stones. Rated: 1/4 May 18, 2024 Full Review Jim Schembri jimschembri.com Yes, the 1984 country music Dolly Parton comedy was a critically derided box-office bomb but, dangnamit, it’s a hoot and a half. Allan B The worst studio movie ever made. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/14/22 Full Review Audience Member I get that most Stallone fans are loyal to his muscled action blockbusters like Rocky and Rambo. But every actor has done something beyond their spectrum (Robin Williams, One Hour Photo. Jim Carrey, Batman) Stallone is not a funny man by any means. But he does hold his own in this wacky comedy. He and Dolly Parton have interesting chemistry together. And he doesn't have a have bad country voice, despite being required for this role. However, the film has enough gags and jokes, with Stallone's own blend of streetwise 'Nick' humor, to make it interesting enough. I know we laughed our butts off during the embarrassment of 'Drinkin Stein', and a few other places. Bottom line: it IS a must-see. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm not sure why I watched this film, but I did. It's not the worst movie I've ever seen, but it's pretty bad. Stallone being turned into a Country Music Star...It's as bad it sounds. The only thing that saves it is the great Dolly Parton and her amazing voice. The premise is very simple and silly. But hey it's from 1984 and the 80's generated some pretty silly movies. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Get a life people this is a fun movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Doubt I would rate so high if I saw it again but this score is based on memory seeing it multiple times as a teenager. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member It was pretty bad. I laughed at how ridiculous it was and the fact that Dolly Parton and Sylvester Stallone were in a movie together. It’s very hard to take him seriously as a country singer. The music wasn’t very good but the main title song was country. The script was a mess and it had lots of plot holes.
