      Critics Consensus

Ride Like a Girl is far from the subtlest inspirational drama, but its fact-based story and charming cast are just enough to guide it down the stretch.

meredith w Regardless of what you may think of the sport of horse racing, this is an inspirational story, even more so because it is the true tale of Michelle Payne becoming the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup. Yet even with knowing its basics, it is still quite emotionally affecting at times, thanks to some great performances from a who's who of Australian film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review steve d You have seen its like before but this one is well done. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Alexandra R Such an inspiring story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/06/21 Full Review mike v Ride Like a Girl is a 2019 Australian biographical sports drama film directed by Rachel Griffiths in her feature film directing debut 🐴 It's good 🙂 I'd recommend it if you like this genre 👍🏼 It's a bit lightweight and not evenly paced, but hey, it's the Melbourne Cup. NEVER GIVE UP Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Loved it! Great performances by every performer! Heart-squeezing and captivating from beginning to end! The soundtrack was wonderful! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member it holds a strong message about sexism and perseverance but i was just bored watching it because horse racing does not interest me. Aug 19, 2020 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian The big-heartedness of this film won me over despite my utter ignorance of the racing world. Rated: 3/5 Jun 25, 2020 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com Griffiths showcases a level of dramatic restraint that gives her movie an extra layer of authenticity that's splendid. Rated: 3/4 Mar 18, 2020 Full Review Alex Behan Stuff.co.nz Director Rachel Griffiths doesn't lay it on too thick - and doesn't need to - the story is an obvious champion. Jul 8, 2021 Full Review Jason Best Marie Claire Rachel Griffiths doesn't steer too far from biopic convention, but... the movie's feelgood final furlongs are sure to have you cheering. Aug 19, 2020 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix As Michelle Payne, [Teresa] Palmer does a credible job with her performance, which solidly carries the whole movie ... Ride Like a Girl is absolutely an inspiring film, but compared to 1944's National Velvet, it just won't be considered a classic. Jul 16, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews
