What to Know

Critics Consensus

It has its moments -- most of them courtesy of Jeff Bridges' rootin' tootin' performance as an undead Wild West sheriff -- but R.I.P.D. is ultimately too dim-witted and formulaic to satisfy.

Roxana Hadadi Punch Drunk Critics Please, please don't see it. Value your time more than I did. Rated: 0/5 Jan 9, 2017 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) Overall, it's a directionless mess: too expensive for a B-movie, too grown-up for a kids' movie (funerals, bereavement and jokes about Steely Dan) and too infantile for everyone else. Rated: 1/4 Feb 25, 2023 Full Review Joe Leydon The Moving Picture Show R.I.P.D. isn’t nearly as bad as its near-deafening advance buzz indicated – though, really, what movie could be? – but that doesn’t mean the laughs and gasps are satisfyingly abundant in this loud and clunky sci-fi fantasy action-comedy. Robert D Gotta to be honest, I do not know what the fuss is about. Yeah, the action itself is quite corny in general. Then the acting at the end wasn’t too good, but the comedy remained quite amazing just like the rest of the movie. Not poorly done, the comedy is odd but they don’t overdo it, got some legendary actors, I suppose the music could be better, but at least in my POV, this is the best Ryan Reynolds movie I’ve ever seen. And I even liked the movie Life so much that I watched it about 20 times already on Netflix. And that’s how good this and that movie is. Definitely a must see if you can. Just don’t watch the sequel because absolutely nothing about it is good or fits. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/24/24 Full Review Nina K I thought it was super fun. Silly, fun, and funny. Over all it's a great movie just to turn your brain off fron the world and enjoy a fun movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/19/24 Full Review Alicia W Utterly silly fun. Interesting concept. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/04/24 Full Review Lúcio Leonardo P When I watched the trailer, I thought: "a different story!". When reading about it, I saw that it is also based on comic books, so why not? And when watching the film....there goes material that could be very good, going down the drain. I didn't read the comic and I don't know if there was much to adapt in an hour and a half, but the result here was very bad. You understand what's going on, but the holes in the plot are clear. And there was no background laughter from Zorra Total to complete the sameness with each unfunny joke that was told... A waste, what a shame, “rest in peace” this “department”. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Liam D Jeff Bridges (King Kong Lives, Blown Away) and Ryan Reynolds (Fireflies in the Garden, Coming Soon) have surprisingly strong chemistry and the visuals are interesting but for a movie based on a graphic novel it’s very formulaic from other movies, sloppy direction by Robert Schwentke (Flightplan, The Time Traveler’s Wife) and generic score by Christophe Beck (Two for the Money, Under the Tuscan Sun) Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review Daniel S Don’t watch this film Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
