      Critics Consensus

Led by a suitably slimy performance from John Malkovich, Ripley's Game brings Patricia Highsmith's bestselling sociopath brilliantly to life.

Douglas P I liked this movie, good scenes from Europe and, a good storyline and John Malkovich is always good. Be sure to watch it to the end, it may get a little slow in the middle but follow it to the end Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/08/23 Full Review Colin M Interesting well-worked movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/20/23 Full Review steve d The acting is good, but I just don't get the appeal of this series. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Expected more. Malkovich was great, but felt slow and not engaging. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/11/22 Full Review Ted B "Ripley's Game" 3.5 stars. This movie is 20 years old. I probably passed on it the first time around, probably because at the time I wasn't much of a John Malkovich fan. Boy, did I cheat myself. This has been my only exposure to the "Ripley" series by Patricia Highsmith. What an interesting character is Ripley. A combination of a social elite and a hit-man that posses no conscious, but has a soul. I thought Mr Malkovich did an excellent job portraying such a complicated character. The supporting cast was also very good, especially Doughty Scott. The supporting actors gave some depth to their characters. The pace of the film was very economical, hardly any wasted scenes. This economy maintained a level of suspense throughout the movie. Excellent directorial work by Ms Cavani. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/21/22 Full Review Audience Member Absolute rubbish! I understand that these films are based on books, but the change between Talented Mr. Ripley versus Ripley's Game is too great. This doesn't even seem like the same guy. I didn't like this character. This Ripley took stupid risks. Nothing made sense here. Ugh! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Alan Morrison Empire Magazine Malkovich is perhaps the best, most chillingly precise Ripley to date. Rated: 4/5 Dec 30, 2006 Full Review Peter Travers Rolling Stone As slithery and seductive a thriller as you'll find. Rated: 3.5/4 Mar 11, 2004 Full Review Andrew Sarris Observer Arguably the most satisfying distillation of Highsmith's nastiness, ingenuity and humor, with the added dividend of Mr. Malkovich's diabolical charm and insouciance. Feb 26, 2004 Full Review Dave Giannini InSession Film It is mostly mediocre fare. There are wasted quality actors, drifting plotting, and less than impressive directorial choices. But any movie with Malkovich in a lead role is not likely to be completely forgettable. Feb 23, 2024 Full Review Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed A surprising film with so much going for it including a lot of intrigue in Hitchcockian proportions...
