Jim Schembri jimschembri.com Tight, well-made bunch o’fun...Features some convincing gore, good VFX and a nicely etched turn by the immortal Michael Biehn who also served as producer. Directed with punch and a deep love of mischievous tension building by Ryan Coonan. Sequel please. Rated: 3/5 Oct 30, 2024 Full Review Miyako Pleines Spectrum Culture Ryan Coonan’s Rippy is nothing short of one of the most uninteresting, boring films to ever grace the screen. 043_ K no horror no comedy idk what to say about this movie Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/01/24 Full Review James M I saw the trailer for this film a while back but didn't think I would get around to seeing it. Then I saw someone had uploaded the full movie on YouTube so I watched it. Not a bad film overall but definitely some flaws in its story, character development and some of the characters decisions, but I'm willing to go easy as this is the directors first big movie debut. I won't have a go at the CGI for the Roo because I know that this is a B grade film and they probably didn't have that big of a budget, but they still made it look good just enough to be sellable. But definitely a still a fun film with lots of gore, so would recommend to people who love a good Aussie animal horror, and look forward to seeing more movies like this in the future. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/01/24 Full Review Hadi K Directed by Ryan Coonan and starring Tess Haubrich and Michael Biehn, "Rippy" attempts to blend horror and comedy with a unique premise: a killer kangaroo terrorizing an Australian town. Sheriff Maddy, played by Haubrich, strives to uphold her father's legacy while confronting the undead menace with her quirky Uncle Schmitty (Biehn) and Aunt Donna. The performances in "Rippy" are largely forgettable. Tess Haubrich delivers a lackluster portrayal of Maddy, failing to infuse her character with the necessary depth or charisma. Michael Biehn's attempt to inject life into the film with his portrayal of Uncle Schmitty is commendable but ultimately insufficient to salvage the film's shortcomings. Ryan Coonan's direction lacks coherence, struggling to balance horror and comedy. The film's tone is inconsistent, often veering into unintended absurdity rather than delivering genuine thrills or laughs. The screenplay, co-written by Coonan and Richard Barcaricchio, is riddled with clichés and lacks originality. The dialogue is uninspired, and character development is minimal, leaving audiences disconnected from the narrative. Cinematography fails to capture the potential of the Australian landscape, which could have added a layer of atmospheric tension. Instead, the visuals are flat and uninspired, further diminishing the film's impact. The soundtrack does little to enhance the film's mood or tension. It feels generic and unmemorable, failing to complement the scenes effectively. Editing is another weak point; pacing issues plague the film, dragging out scenes that should be tense or exciting. One of "Rippy's" most glaring flaws is its reliance on poor CGI for the titular kangaroo. The creature effects are unconvincing and detract from any potential scares or suspense. Practical gore effects are somewhat effective but overshadowed by the jarring digital imagery. "Rippy" attempts to explore themes of legacy and courage but does so superficially. The emotional arcs feel forced, lacking depth or nuance. The film fails to convey its messages effectively, leaving viewers disengaged. Compared to other creature features like "Razorback" or "The Reef," "Rippy" falls short in delivering either genuine horror or engaging storytelling. Unlike these films, which successfully create tension and atmosphere, "Rippy" feels disjointed and uninspired. Overall, "Rippy" is a disappointing entry into the creature feature genre. Its lackluster performances, poor CGI, and inconsistent tone result in a film that neither entertains nor thrills. For those seeking a compelling horror-comedy experience, this film is unlikely to satisfy. I would rate it 1 out of 5 stars for its failure to deliver on its intriguing premise. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review Audience Member U can clearly tell a few things in this movie was fake and it was a low budget horror film i didn't expect much. Some of the gore in here was sick and some of the comedy in here, made me and a friend chuckle here and there. Probably won't watch it again tho Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/24/24 Full Review C B Would have probably worked better if it were a comedy/thriller instead of almost 100% serious, with too much emphasis placed on the past traumas of the two main characters (the female sheriff and the Vietnam veteran). I am looking forward to the sequel about a zombie koala bear. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/23/24 Full Review Winston A I noticed a few regular actors from Stralian horror movies I'd seen before but to be honest the CGI kinda cratered it for me. It wasn't the worst CGI I have ever seen but I've seen so much better effects in Stralian' Horror that I was expecting way more. For a good example of Stralian Horror that utilizes CGI with creatures created out of latex and animatronics watch "Rogue". All and all if you are into Stralian Horror which is kind of it's own genre within the Horror genre then this 'Rippy" is a must watch along with "Boar" and "Rogue". All and all it wasn't a bad movie but really could have been so much better if it had just utilized animatronics and puppets for some scenes of the mutant kangaroo. There are a couple of good shots where the director shot the CGI from a distance that were actually decent. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/19/24 Full Review Read all reviews
