Bloody Disgusting

The villain is tied to a(n undercooked) back story that provides an explanation of sorts, but it’s less satisfying than the unraveling homosocial bonds between the doctors as they negotiate the perilous, rugged Canadian landscape.

What makes so much of The Creeper work in terms of its outright horror is the solid acting from Holbrook. An early, subtle, and menacing slasher.

I think for a 1977 Canadian orientated horror movie, it is very well done. The acting, camera work, dialogue, situations and scare scenes are all top notch for the time - very underrated movie in my opinion.

If seven basic narratives exist, then: Both Deliverance ('72) and Rituals ('76) are based upon the kill one by one narrative ('tenlittleniggers*' - agatha christie) ('39). I imagine the Rambo makers deciding to expand the final 20 minutes of Ritual and inverting the story into a 'who's stalking who?' narrative. Although there are irritations with the idiotic shouting and it does encourage you to question 'why didn't they do (such and such)', I found this a strong film. *- This was the original title of Christie's novel, later changed to 'tenlittleindians', which is equally disparaging but happily used worldwide.

Rituals (1977) C-94m. ? 1/2 D: Peter Carter. Hal Holbrook, Lawrence Dane, Robin Gammell. Five men on wilderness vacation find themselves alone and dealing with a skilled killer; essentially a violent ripoff of DELIVERANCE. Extremely unpleasant. Aka THE CREEPER.

Basically a copycat of "Deliverance" this stars Hal Halbrook as one of 5 doctor friends who go on a weekend trip with each other only to have things turn tragic. They quickly find out they are being hunted by someone while dealing with their personal demons and past before the film comes to its climatic conclusion. Considered a underrated film i didnt find it near as great as some of the reviews made it out to be so my recommendation is stick with "Deliverence". 6/10
