In this animated film, Chanticleer (Glen Campbell), a barnyard rooster, has convinced the other animals that his crowing makes the sun rise. When, one day, he forgets to crow and the sun comes up anyway, the secret is out. He heads for the big city in shame. But as massive storms and dark clouds stop the sun from appearing, the farm animals get worried, so a mouse named Peepers (Sandy Duncan) and a kitten called Edmond (Toby Scott Granger) lead the gang on a trip to find Chanticleer in the city.

Nell Minow Movie Mom Rated: 3/5 Dec 24, 2002 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times The movie has some good songs and some lively animation, but what bothered me was that most of the interaction between characters was on the level of violence. Rated: 2/4 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Marjorie Baumgarten Austin Chronicle Rated: 2/5 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Malcolm Johnson Hartford Courant For all the technical feats, droll touches and some rooster rockabilly belted out by Glen Campbell, "Rock-a-Doodle" comes off as slight as its title, a cartoon in search of a story to tell. May 30, 2018 Full Review James Plath Family Home Theater The problem . . . as is so often the case with non-Disney animated features, is the concept itself--and that includes a live-action 'frame' that seems gratuitous, even clunky. Rated: C+ Jan 16, 2018 Full Review Tim Brayton Alternate Ending It certainly does feel like a dream, albeit the kind you have when you're running a fever and have gotten all messed up on cough medicine. Matty D Rock-a-doodle is a complex, if at times a bit clunky, animated feature full of heart. The story of rooster Chanticleer is about purpose and our beliefs, what motivates and drives us. Chanticleer the sun-raising rooster becomes the big city King swinger, surrounded by women, fast cars, and money. It’s a story that goes on today more than thirty years after this film’s release. Chanticleer’s story is only stunted by Edmund’s, the live action farm boy, who wants to help his family during a time of crisis. I’m not sure why this was in live action, if only to bring in a touch of early 90s cinema magic. While Edmund’s story and motivations are well-rounded, the cinematography is stilted as to not scare little children and this hinders Edmund’s plot. The film’s other problem is memorable songs for its barn owl villain and his army—there are none. However, the songs Chanticleer sings are nothing short of lively and character-driven, with a show stopping opening number. Rock-a-doodle may not reach the emotional or musical heights of The Lion King, but as a barnyard fable with something to say, it is always entertaining and engaging. I loved this film as a toddler and still love it today as an adult. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/14/25 Full Review Jessica D Honestly, I don’t know why it’s so hated. I mean it’s not the greatest movie of all time, but it shouldn’t be despised. It’s got some good songs and clever writing at times. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/13/25 Full Review Audience Member Definitely not dons worst movie, and the songs are really good.
