What to Know

Critics Consensus

Rocky IV inflates the action to absurd heights, but it ultimately rings hollow thanks to a story that hits the same basic beats as the first three entries in the franchise.

Say what you like about the original Rocky, at least it was about something -- a sweet pug up against the system, and in love with a dowd. Rocky IV appears to be an epic about Sylvester Stallone's penchant for self-abuse. Go to Full Review

'Rocky IV' still stands, not as a highlight of the series (certainly not that) but as a quintessential artifact of mid-'80s studio filmmaking: soulless, flag-waving, soundtrack-blasting Product. Go to Full Review

Padded with clips from earlier Rocky pictures, adding nothing to his mythic, let alone human dimensions, it lacks even the primitive suspense and crude capacity to release underdog emotions that permitted its predecessors to conquer one's better judgment. Go to Full Review

The fourth entry in the Rocky-verse is a hard-hitting 90-minute music video, using political undertones of the Cold War to amplify a grudge match driven by revenge, fear, and guilt. Go to Full Review

Ben W Nov 10 Very fun watch. Love these classics See more Cody Nov 10 When you see this new director's cut of Rocky IV, you can see what Sylvester Stallone's vision was for the original. While the original theatrical release was a fun, cheesy 80's blockbuster experience, and serves as a symbolic metaphor for the Cold War - this new edition shows a more serious take on the story and emotions of the characters. It actually felt like an entirely different tone, similar to that of the three films before it. The only thing I will I wish wasn't cut from the film - was the original opening title sequence. In the original it featured two boxing gloves: one of the American flag and the other of the Soviet Union flag, and it was showcasing this intense build up to what would be the ultimate clash between two rivaling nations. I understand why they cut it, because Stallone most likely didn't want the film to be Cold War propaganda/metaphor that it was originally shown as. But it was an exciting and cheesy sequence. Overall it is truly a must see, especially for fans of the Rocky franchise. See more Joe Nov 10 Garbage. Stallone ruined a classic See more Franco E Nov 10 This movie is great. See more Philip A Nov 10 Sylvester Stallones Rocky IV: Rocky vs. Drago is more than just a recut — its a revitalized testament to perseverance, respect, and the warrior spirit that defines the Rocky saga. With forty minutes of newly restored and reimagined footage, Stallone deepens the emotional pulse of the film without altering its triumphant arc. The result is a leaner, more soulful version that honors both the grit of competition and the dignity of ones opponent. Where the 1985 original roared with Cold War bravado, this cut brings nuance and heart. Stallones careful edits shift the focus from political rivalry to personal resolve — a story not about defeating an enemy, but conquering fear, pain, and pride. The training montages remain electrifying, but its the quieter moments, like Rockys introspection and Dragos humanization, that truly shine. The new pacing and sound design give the film a raw immediacy, and Stallones direction highlights the philosophy that warriors dont run from challenges — they embrace them with respect and purpose. Rocky vs. Drago is a powerful reexamination of courage, humility, and endurance. It proves that even decades later, Stallone still knows how to make our hearts go the distance. See more Luis Nov 10 overall still a good version. some of the scenes substituted for different versions of the same scene felt lesser. I still prefer the original. somewhere in between this version and the original lies the better version. See more Read all reviews
