What to Know

Critics Consensus

An engrossing documentary look at ordinary lives, Romántico puts relatable individual faces on issues that are far too often dehumanized.

Michael Wilmington Chicago Tribune ... a fine example of how the new technologies enable filmmakers to tell stories hard to capture before. Rated: 3/4 Jan 26, 2007 Full Review Tasha Robinson AV Club There's nothing extraordinary about mariachi singer Carmelo Muiz Snchez, and nothing extraordinary about Mark Becker's documentary profile Romntico. At times, that seems to be the point. Rated: C Jan 19, 2007 Full Review Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle Romntico would be nothing if it were just a hard-luck story. The movie is something else: the revelation of a way of life, of a whole area of human experience going on right under our noses -- or standing over our restaurant tables. Rated: 3/4 Jan 19, 2007 Full Review Beverly Berning culturevulture.net It is like a duet in which both men work together to achieve a kind of cinematic harmony, and out of it comes a beautiful recording of the universal struggle that is life. Apr 23, 2007 Full Review Eric Monder Film Journal International A touching and worthwhile experience. Mar 1, 2007 Full Review Mike Russell Oregonian A low-key personal portrait that helps you understand an illegal immigrant's desperate psychology. But mostly, it fills you with an aching empathy for this profoundly decent man, who numbly (even heroically) soldiers on. Rated: B+ Feb 2, 2007 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Conmovedora Pelicula un aplauso!!!!! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member This was REALLY good - check it out on WIN! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member An intimate, low key and decidedly unromantic depiction of poverty. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member I came across this movie through Netflix. It was a hot Sunday afternoon. I was bored scrolling through the Netflix queue on the Xbox. I started to watch this movie solo next thing you know the whole family was propt on the couch watching, singing to the songs which reminded them of when they used to live in Mexico. It hit home for most of us, very beautiful movie. My mom wanted more, we even watched all the credits singing to the famous song. This movie captured the sad and true living and struggle of many Mexican people. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member A tear jerker. It tugs at the heart. My grandfather has made a living as a mariachi guitar player all his life. This helped me appreciate him that much more. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member People who share the ideas of assholes like Lou Dobbs and Jim Gilchrist should see this movie.
